I live slightly north of Philly and my sister lives slightly north of NYC. We are trying to find some neat places to meet 1/2 way between us. It takes me about 2.5 hours to get to her house. I don't mind driving a bit further, her kids are smaller so we are trying to keep their drive to under 2 hours.
So far I have looked in to Island Beach NJ which is 2 hours for both of us, which is doable. I just don't know how to find anything else! Google isn't helping much!

Grounds for Sculpture! It's a beautiful sculpture garden in Hamilton, NJ. Even though it's modern art, it's still kind of a park that little ones can run around in. The food at Rat's is delicious, but pricey.

I'm not terribly familiar with Princeton, but I've met my friend from Astoria, Queens there for lunch and it was very doable for both of us. There may be good playgrounds and parks in the area.

If you feel like spending the money for tickets, there's always Six Flags Great Adventure.

If you time it to hit an exhibition or competition, you could pack picnic lunches and meet at the Horse Park of NJ. It's very close to the turnpike.

That's funny, my sisters live just west of Philly (not together just near each other,) and dad and I live just west of NYC (again not together just near each other.) One of my sisters can't drive, so often when she visits our dad or us, BIL drives her half way and I meet them then take her the rest of the way.

Our most frequent meeting spot is a place called "Frank's Pizza." It's on route 18 off of exit 9 on the turn pike. It isn't very exciting, but it is just about half way and a good pizza place.

More exciting places we have done are:
  • Woodbridge mall, in Woodbridge NJ
  • The Crayola Factory, in Easton PA
  • the boardwalk, in Point Pleasant NJ
  • Northlandz, in Flemington NJ
  • The outlet shops, also in Flemington NJ.
  • Sheperds Lake at Ringwood State park, in Ringwood NJ
  • Allaire State Park (I can't remeber the town it's in, but it's in NJ.)
  • The Wegmans, in Woodbridge NJ
  • Various things in New Hope PA

Some of these are closer to one area than the other, but they are all a shorter drive than going all the way from one home to the other.

I second Grounds For Sculpture-especially when they have music in the evenings.

Dorbrook Park/Spray Park in Colt's Neck, NJ is a great place to meet. It is free & you can bring in your lunches. Plenty of spots to set up a picnic in between the playground & Spray Park. It's a few miles off exit 109/Garden State Parkway...not sure if that is 1/2 between or easy for you both to get to.

Land of Make Believe in Hope NJ. Check it out. It might be a little further for one of you but it's just about even driving time and tons of fun!! I had a blast there with my 2 year old son and my 6 year old nephew.

We live right outside NYC and our good friends live in a suburb of Philly. We met up with them last summer at the Garden State Discovery Museum - http://www.discoverymuseum.com/
in Cherry Hill. The kids really enjoyed it; they were 5, 3 and 1 at the time.
