Hi, Im 8 1/2 weeks pregnant and have to find a new OB. Mine was promoted and doesn't practice Obstetrics anymore. I would love to deliver at Morristown Memorial. I've considered Avalon Midwives, but not thrilled with the idea of not knowing who you will get on delivery day since there are 5 of them, I'm not a person who handles change well. I'd prefer an OB that supports a natural birth. If anyone has any recos I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks all.

My homebirth midwife uses David Garfinkel of One To One Female Care as her backup. He's very good at hands-off apparently. I've only met him briefly because he did my c-section. It's a small practice of him and a midwife (I think) so you'd not have to worry about getting one of 8 people show up at your birth.

Isn't Dr. Judy Banks an Ob-Gyn at Morristown who is often recommended on here too?

I used Tina Alessi a midwife at One to One Female Care for my 3 births... she is wonderful and has a great practice. Morristown is a great place to give birth as far as hospitals go.... I would not use anyone else! pm if your want specifics

I know a local doula had a beautiful waterbirth about 6 months ago with Dr Banks and was totally happy with her. I was shocked to find out that a doctor would attend a water birth! I have another friend who used to doula a couple years ago (and was a doula for a long time) who always suggested Dr Banks to her clients.

I'd give Dr. Garfinkel a try if you are sure about wanting an OB. I met him only once, when I had to go for a stress test at 41 weeks with my second baby. He's the backup to my hb mw (as mentioned above). He seemed very hands-off, and my mw often joked that he was more midwifey than the midwife who works with him (Tina Alessi), which ITA with after meeting him.

I think Garfinkle is a great OB, a little brusque, not really into chit chat AT ALL, but he is one of the only OB's in this area who actively supports women's reproductive rights, and he is very much pro-VBAC...as much and an OB could be. That speaks to his commitment to natural birth in general, I think. I also agree that he is more midwifey than his midwife, which is why I switched practices to Avalon (quite frankly).

A lot of people like Dr. Winsome Parchment from Maplewood. She's also willing to do VBACs (my neighbor had one last month!)

Not sure where you are, but the Hackettstown Midwives are excellent.  They work with Dr Garfinkel & birth at Morristown. I cannot say enough great things about them.  They are very holistically minded & do home births as well.  Roxie is the best of the 3 & Lisa is a close 2nd.  You can google Hackettstown Midwives & find their practice.  They also have a doula who works with their practice.

I work at MMH-- and Judy Banks is a favorite of many here. If need an OB- Garfinkle is also popular because he works with a midwife (Tina A).

I actually don't do change very well either innocent.gif-- but I LOVED Avalon and would use them again in a heartbeat. You rotate through the group, and of course I had my favorite because they all had different personalities, and my mental list of who I would rather attend my birth in order of preference. My top pick wasn't on the day I gave birth last Dec.-- but I trusted that the MW who was there was "meant to be" and that I needed to go with it. And honestly, I think she was the perfect fit for the process-- very hands off and QUIET, which is what I wanted.

It wasn't pretty and pain free....lolol.....but I had the all natural hospital birth that I had planned. My MW was great at "protecting me" from any intervention--and honestly, after I checked in and told the l&d nurse that I was not getting an IV and I was wearing my own clothes I never saw her again....my MW stayed with us for the duration of the time until my son was born (7 hours, I think).

Congrats to you!!!

I'm currently seeing Tina Alessi at Dr. Garfinkle's One to One Female Care office and I love them! In fact I love the whole office. Everyone who works there is wonderful and I think they also have a new female OBGYN on staff if you aren't interested in seeing a male Dr.

All I have to say is stay away from Morristown OBGYN, I've had a horrible experience!!! i was pregnant not too long ago and lost my child. I had questions about my allergies and called the office multiple times, never got a call back. I finally went back to find out that my child's heartbeat stopped. Even when I finally had to schedule a DNC the staff was just unattentive and rude. I called the office ones before to find out what is happening to me since I was in a lot of pain and never heard from them! I kept calling and calling until one of the doctors finally anwered and said I was on a list and someone would eventually return my call....really!!!??? I will never, ever go back!! Ladies stay away from them!

I'm another happy Avalon client, as I've mentioned in other threads.  I actually liked the rotation of midwives, b/c to me, it ensured that ONE of them would be available for my birth.

If I had gone with a single midwife who practices independently (not even sure if that's an option at Morristown, this is just an example), then what would happen if that midwife was attending another birth, or was sick, or had a family emergency, at the time I went into labor?  I could end up with no midwife at all -- talk about "change" at the last minute.

I also liked knowing that I could talk to an on-call midwife at any hour of the day or night, if I had a concern (I hope I didn't abuse that privilege and drive them nuts!)  2whistle.gif

newbie43, your story sounds very sad -- I had a previous loss myself (when I was living in another state, not when I was a client of Avalon).  But I don't think your situation would have happened with Avalon Midwives; the longest I ever had to wait for a call back was about two hours.

Another vote for Dr. Judy banks. I just had a client have an amazing VBAC with her on Saturday, and she was my cp for the unmedicated birth of my twins.  Here is a blog post I just wrote describing her approach: http://www.doulanj.com/blog.html

Good Luck!

I do NOT recommend Dr. Banks. I thought she was a great doctor (saw high ratings/reviews, picked her because she supports 'natural childbirth') and I thought I would have a positive experience with her. Unfortunately, that was not the case. She ordered pitocin for me after deeming I had been laboring too long (she didn't even come see me! this was over the phone with the nurses) and after a snowball of interventions, I ended up with a forceps delivery and episiotomy. I wanted to try delivering in a different position to avoid the episiotomy (with gravity working in my favor) but had a room full of people yelling 'push' instead of the calm birth I wanted. The worst part was, I couldn't get a hold of Dr.Banks. She came at the VERY end to slice me and stitch me. She let an intern place the forceps, all I remember is Dr.Banks yelling 'NO! No! you're doing it wrong' at the intern/resident as she was placing the forceps. I have nightmares about it. I am lucky my baby was healthy and perfect. My delivery was the single most traumatic experience of my life.
