Hi!  We are possibly moving to NW PA in the next few months.  We are a novax family and I am interested in any and all info you all may have.  It is going to be a big move as we are currently in SE NC.  I know Crawford County PA was one of the possibilities.  Any Doc recommendations, homeschooling/ family groups, yahoo sites etc you can recommend for that area I would appreciate it.   WE are looking for some property with 3 or more acres as well (my hubby found one with 70 acres not sure if we want that much but willing to look).  We are hoping to have a cow or 2, goats, chickens etc possibly to start my small hobby farm dream.  Any recommendations would be appreciated or links for good groups in the area.  Thank you all!  Amy

I am not a resident of the area, but I vacation in Crawford County every summer--my husband's family has a bunch of property up there and has been going there for several generations.  A couple of years ago, I posted a question about natural family living resources in the area to this forum with no responses.  My own internet research mostly led to dead ends (venturing to farmers markets that didn't exist, or had only summer squash at best. . . much to the humor of my in-laws) but there are a few bright spots that are worth investigating further and may be the gateway to the kinds of things you are looking for.  In Edinboro, Goodell Gardens has had a farmers market for the past couple of years that has a lot of positive energy from its organizers, but isn't yet thriving.  They are dreaming big, and I hope they succeed, but they still need to convince both the customers and farmers to participate.  The market in Meadville has been different every year I've visited it.  It has a beautiful building, and the farmer I liked best (and the only one at the time with organic produce) was thinking about going to a CSA model--good for them, not great for the market as a whole.  There are a couple of good meat sources--grass-fed beef on the main road just south of Edinboro and a Bison farm near the Edinboro Walmart.  My guess is that if you start with the food, you can network with like-minded folk who can lead you to the other families with health and education situations similar to yours.

As far as purchasing land goes, don't overlook foreclosed farms. Our main family property has been in the family for about a hundred years, but my father-in-law has purchased other land because, from his point-of-view, the deals were too good to pass up.  He is mostly dabbles in "land preservation", so the value to him isn't really an investment as much as maintaining the rural personality of the area.

Hi Amy! I recently moved back to Crawford County (Titusville) from Pittsburgh. I also do not vaccinate my 11 month old son. It has been difficult to find the right doctor. Right now I take him to Dr. Weible with Childrens Community Pediatrics in Erie. While she will still see my son, I Have been looking for a different doc that is more supportive. If I find something I will def post more.

I'm in Crawford County (Meadville).  We use Dr. Lashbrook- we do vax (selectively and on a delayed schedule) and she has been very supportive.

I don't have any personal experience, but I recently found out that there is a naturopathic practice here as well...
