My mom is an occasional fabric artist, and is working on a project and doesn't know where to go now that Fabric Place is closing. Anyone know of anywhere to find a good selection of fabrics. She's on the north shore and I'm in metrowest.

Not in the area, but on-line is fabric.com I get a lot of stuff from them and it is generally a lot cheaper than in a store.

When I need to go to a store, I generally go to Fabric Stash in Charlton, but that would be a trek for you.

There are also lots of Jo-Anns around as PP said. I think there is one in Natick too, and Shrewsbury.

Yeah, we're bummed about Fabric Place closing too! I go to Jo-Ann's sometimes but the one near us is on route 9 and sort of a PITA to get to. Sigh. I've bought some fabric online too which is fun to find unique stuff, but pricier.

Not sure what kinds of fabric she uses, but there are two good quilt supply stores, The Cambridge Quilt Shop in Cambridge and Quilter's Way in West Concord.

If you want to do the drive there is Saftler's in Whitman.

There is also Sew Low and Discount Fabrics in Cambridge... both very hit or miss but fun to poke around.

Also a link worth looking over: http://www.tomfarrell.org/textiles/stores/

So sad Fabric Place is gone.

Maybe a bit of a drive for her depending on where she is on the North Shore, but Zimman's in Lynn is an institution and worth the trip (it's been there since 1909)! Just be warned...you could spend the whole day in that place

They've always had a good selection of remnents when I've gone and IIRC the basement is all sale fabrics.

Any good sales going on at Fabric Place? I need kid flannel and need to avoid Black Friday at Joann's for the 1.49 flannel! Save me!

Are all the locations closing or just the Framingham one? I was there a few weeks ago and there was very little left.

Not sure how far she's willing to go, but my Mom finds me the most beautiful and unusual fabrics at Portsmouth Fabric Co. in Portsmouth, NH.

There's also Saftler's on Route 18 in Whitman (the intersection with 18 and 14). It's not really near any highway-- Route 24 is probably the closest, I'd take the Route 106 exit, then 106 east to 18 and north to Saftlers.

Then you can hop down the street and get homemade ice cream at Peaceful Meadows.
