There are 6 chicks in the basement:
2 RI reds and 4 RI whites. They aren't sexed so we could have 6 roosters for all we know...
Dh ran out the door as soon as we brought the chicks home because he didn't manage to get starter feed this morning- he was chopping down hollly trees in the yard. It's been a productive day.... k, sorry to go so o/t! Maybe I'll go harass the yahoo group

Yup, that's great!!

Can you feed the chicks your food scraps? There is a thread in the TF forum about what chickens are supposed to eat but, I'm not sure if baby chicks need something different.

oooh! Can you link to the thread? I want to feed them minimal "chicken food". I've read that you can start giving them scraps when they are a little older but should consider it candy and be sure not to fill them up on "candy". I don't know how I feel about that advice.... so other input would be greatly appreciated. Either way- I think at this point they are too young for scraps... not positive though.

Cool about the chicks! Why couldn't you get them sexed?
We always gave ours starter mash or something like that when they were little. They grow so fast though, I'm sure you can introduce other choices in a few weeks. I don't see why food scraps would be "candy" any more than corn? My parents always give theirs a good amount of food scraps. Pickings from their compost bin and overgrown squash from the garden, that kind of thing, not processed food in other words. Well, bread I guess, oatmeal etc... It can add to the smell though if you don't rake out what they don't eat. Unfortunately my parents always seem to have a smell problem with their chicken coops though
They are getting new chicks soon too!

See you all on Monday.

Hey - I just found out that my MIL, who was here all day Friday, has pink eye. Should I stay home on Monday?

Anyone know if giving BM now before we have any symptoms will keep it away? I might be able to squeeze out enough drops for me and Sam. I think DH would rather take his chances

Sarah - congrats about the chics - can't wait to see some pics!!!

Update - I checked online and it looks like pink eye is only contagious if the person has the symptoms so, I will stay home if Sam actually gets pink eye but will show up if he doesn't - if that sounds okay with everyone and it doesn't rain!

Sarah- here is one link, and here is another and another.

Shalonne- I'd say go ahead and put any BM in all of your eyes that you can just to be safe, it is sooooo contagious. It won't hurt to be safe, kwim? You could potentially avoid it all together.

I just have to say, I'm so glad we have this group It's wonderful to have all of you mamas close by I hope all of our new recruits feel the same way and that any others feel free to join us.

Jojo- you rock! Dh was finding articles last night from the grass fed people about chicken feed needs and it was making my eyes go cross eyed. This info is much more palatable (no pun intended) imo.

Yay for chickens! Both my VT and FL families have chickens. Alas, none for us in Warwick.

I wanted to tell you ladies that I'm looking forward to joining you all again for the park, but haven't had a car for a week or so.

It looks like play group may be a bust all week it's supposed to rain every day except Wednesday. We'll probably still head over to Brown street if it looks like the rain will hold off.

I think we might go and see what happens weather-wise.

On the other hand Wed and Fri look a bit better in terms of sun. Any takers for those days?

We're going to stay home today - kind of far to drive on a day with a good chance of rain. Sam's not really himself today either. He had huge crying and screaming fit this morning and I have no idea why. He either wouldn't or couldn't tell me what was wrong and I couldn't figure it out. He seems fine now but I figure it's best to stay home in case he's coming down with something.

We can do Wednesday as long as Sam is okay. We have the chiropractor at 9am but after that, we are free

It looks like today isn't going to happen, I need a nap anyway. I didn't sleep well last night.

And it took longer at the DHS office, go figure

It was great to see Sonja, Deb, and Kristen briefly, though I felt like a fraud showing up at playgroup without my baby!

(I was just there to pick up a carrier that Kristen is lending us.)

Anyway, I miss you guys. I'll go to school late on the next really nice playgroup day, and come hang out with you all first.

Can you PM me your address? If my husband ends up working - we may be able to join you! I'd love to help Leo celebrate his birthday If my husband doesn't have to work, then we need to work on Anika's room.

Should we do Brown again on Wednesday so that those that didn't make it today can still see it? I sure hope Wednesday stays nice!!! It seems like every time I take Sam to the playground he does something new and fun. I'd hate to have a whole week go by without being able to take him. I want to see my friends too!
