Hello Ladies,

I just found out that my insurance company is changing as of Aug 15 and I am kind of freaking out. I'm a grad student at URI and our network is changing from UnitedHealth to First Health. There seems to be no overlap in the providers covered between the two networks. I'm only 10 wks and have seen my current midwife once so I though now would be the best time to switch. Or should I wait until Aug to switch? Also there are only four midwifes covered by the new plan and I was wondering if anyone has used any of them.

Wendy Warburton and Elizabeth Diaz at PVD Community Health Centers
Deborah Drew at Thundermist Health Ctr
Mary Mumford Haley at Primary Care Center of Quality Hill

Thanks so much for your help,
Stephanie

I just had a baby 6 weeks ago, and Mary Mumford-Haley was my midwife. She and her team are awesome. I was recommended to her through many of the women on mdc, since I was specifically looking for a VBAC. I'm not familiar with the other midwives you listed, but Mary is great! Good luck.

First, welcome and congrats! I'm a grad student at Brown with a 20 month old.

Second, if you're switching to First Health, you should have many more options than that. If you're using their online system, one problem I've found is that sometimes people aren't listed unless they're MDs. So, the midwives in a practice won't show up, even though they're covered. So, you might want to investigate more. I have First Health, and had plenty of options, including everyone at Women's Care and OBGYN Assoc. Call your current office and ask them- I bet they're in network.

Third, I birthed with Mary Mumford Haley and she is AMAZING! I highly recommend her, and if you search these forums, you'll find lots of other people who think so as well.

Congrats and good luck!

Women's Care is covered by First Health and they are fabulous. Try using the name of OB Dr Caron - but actually use the midwives in the practice.

I saw Mary Mumford-Haley when pregnant with baby #3 and LOVED her. (Michelle Palmer, whom I also LOVE, was at the birth.) I had a great experience at Pawtucket Memorial too. I highly recommend them!!

Thanks,

I guess it was naive of me to think the insurance website would be up-to-date and accurate. Thanks for the insight, looks like I have some phone calls to make.

One other thing- I don't know if your insurance is similar to ours, but we have preferred labs that we're supposed to use for bloodwork and ultrasounds. If you use the preferred lab, it's 100% covered. If not, you pay out of pocket until you've reached your deductible. I didn't know that, and ended up paying for a lot of stuff that would have been covered if I'd just gone to a different lab.

Another 'two thumbs up' for Mary Mumford Haley. She delivered my son and will be delivering our new arrival this July. She let me push for 4 hours...said anywhere else it would have been a c-section.
