i was wondering if there were any new haven-based homeschoolers or unschoolers who might be interested in getting together to share fun activities and support. our son is turning four in a few months, and so far i haven't had much luck connecting with other homeschooling/unschooling families with young kiddos...though i know they must be out there!

Here is a list of CT homeschool groups. You could also join this group.

We are in Hamden!
We are just beginning to get connected with other homeschoolers in this area. My boys are 6.5 and 3.5 (birthdays in feb. and March).

This is what we are up to at the moment...
We have joined a Classical Christian Co-op for Pre-Physics and Pre-Chemistry for my older son. They have been in existence for 10 years or so. That takes place at 135 Whitney (It's a church on the corner) diagonally across from the Peabody museum. They also offer Art and Geography. Moms/Dads with the younger ones hang out and play. After class, we haed over to the Peabody museum, or the Eli Whitney to play. Feel free to stop in on a Wednesday around 2:30! If you are interested in more info, here is a contact email (she is one of the organizers)kim.nobrega@springinnovation.com.

Also, we are part of a Democratic play group (not political - just promoting group decision making) that meets at West Rock park/Amhryn Field (intersection of Hard and Stone Streets in Westville). This group is all ages from babies to age 11! Very casual and friendly group that meets in the park on Wednesdays from 11-1. I think they wrap things up mid-November when it gets too cold to be outside. The kids play in the strem, hike, explore, play games, etc. Again, please feel welcome to join us!

One more GREAT HS program takes place in Hamden at Common Ground High School on Fridays from 12:30 - 2:30. Ages are 4-7?. It just started this past Friday, and I'm sure there is still room!! The cost is about 80-100 per child and the program lasts 8 weeks. The focus is agricultural - gardening, composting, caring for their chickens, etc. My kids LOVE this place, and my older son says the instructor is "wonderful!" You can look up their website (even request a catalog of programs) and check out their many fantastic offerings. We even bought seedlings from them last May - and we had the best veggie garden ever!!! Organic heirloom tomatoes to die for!

I work on Wednesdays so DH takes the boys to the group at the park, but then I meet up with them at the Whitney Ave group. DH also does the Common Ground group (This one I am really sorry to miss!!) since I am at work then too.

You may certainly PM me or continue this discussion if it might be helpful! I don't get on this site too often though...
I have tried many avenues to hook up with other kids/families and have had the most luck with The Greater New Haven Homeschoolers Yahoo group. I was reluctant to join b/c I wanted to meet real people and don't have alot of time for chatting on the web, but this group/board has been a great source of info and connections!

Good Luck to you!

hello there!
we are in Westville and we are also looking for unschoolers in our area! I have a 3,5 yo boy and we love hiking and exploring.

OTmama, the democratic playgroup sounds great- can we just come and say hello or do we need to register ?
