Hey Mamas,

I am a mama that lives in Milwaukee Wisc. The end of May my hubby and 21 month old DS will be heading to Massachusetts for 8 days to stay with my in-laws. They don't understand our homebirth/cloth diapering/no chemicals/organic eating lifestyle so it will be interesting! :)

I am looking to find out if there are any natural health food stores...Whole Foods, Trader Joes, local independent shops.... some place to buy organic food. Do any of the major grocery stores carry a good selection of organic food/produce (but not tooooo expensive)? We will be flying into Logan and will be driving down to Plymouth where they live. If there is any store on the way, we could stop on the way to their place.

I am also a huge children's thrift/resale store junky! Are there any in the area? I would love to check them out and get toys for my in-laws place.

Thanks so much!

Amanda :)

Depending on the time of day, it will probably take under an hour to drive from Logan to Plymouth.  There is a Whole Foods very close to the exit at exit 15- Hingham on Route 3.  It is really just off the highway, so it would be pretty easy to stop there.  However, most of the markets in Plymouth should have enough organic/natural sections to get by with should you decide to just get settled in and stay local.  It is around 30 minutes to drive from Plymouth to the Whole Foods-- there's also another Health Food store in Hanover that has produce (Good Health)  http://www.goodhealthnaturalfood.com/

There is a Health Food store in Plymouth at exit 5, but they do not have produce (Healthy Appetites) http://www.healthyappetites.com/retailer/store_templates/shell_id_1.asp?storeID=EDC577ED65CE4F4EB04AC47F85CED9C4.

There is a consignment shop in Kingston Former Favorites 61 Summer st and another one  in Norwell Tummies 2 Teens near exit 14 (less than 10 min. between Whole Foods and Trader Joe's).  Tummies 2 Teens is closed Mondays  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tummies-2-Teens/104938726249513 .  Former Fav can have varied hours- 508-273-5726 (Tracy)   Savers in Plymouth is a thrift shop but I haven't found they had a great selection of kids toys.

You will be missing the start of the Farmers Market in Plymouth by a few weeks but there are a few local markets in towns nearby (Hingham on Saturday's).  If you are looking for kids activities, South Shore Mamas http://southshoremamas.com/  and South Shore Kids http://www.southshorekidsblog.com/ posts a bunch of events.

Gotta run, but that might get you started!

I was also going to suggest getting off of exit 15 in Hingham to stop at Whole Foods. Trader Joe's is in Hyannis (on the Cape) so that's an extra 15-30 minutes down the highway (depending upon where in Plymouth you'll be staying.)

I suggest you try Blue Blinds in the downtown area if you want to go out for breakfast or lunch one day. It's tiny (only 5-6 tables inside) but delicious food. Lots of the stuff is organic and/or made on the farm of the religious group who run it and they sell their organic homemade bread, which is soooo delicious. VERY limited menu but very good food. The same folks who run Blue Blinds also run a small natural food store around the corner (Common Sense Wholesome Food.) Both places are closed on Saturdays.

No time to write more now...

In Boston, you'll easily find Whole Foods.  On the cape, there's a place on Rt 28 in Yarmouth and another of the same brand somewhere else, i just can't remember the name but thats where I got my allergy friendly food.  There's the Bradford Natural Mkt in Provincetown as well, and Angel Foods in Ptown has some.  Ptown has a farmer's market on Saturday, and Truro vineyards carries raw cheese.
