I really like the Addison Art Gallery (free!) in Phillips Academy in Andover. Older kids can appreciate more, but for younger ones there are model ships in the basement. They have a neat walking path around the back of the school too.

There is great hiking in Andover - I don't remember all the names, but the Trustees of the Reservation keep some of the sites. One is a quick hike which gives views of Boston from a solstice formation!

There is Smolak Farms (www.smolakfarms.com) - which is not organic but fun to visit.

There is the airport in Lawrence that has a little cafe where you can eat and watch planes.

Older kids would like the NPS sites in Lowell - younger ones appreciate the train and the sound of the mills!

I love the parks in Newburyport - I can't remember which is which, but Mosley woods and Maudlesy park are great. It is fun to walk downtown and see the boats too. You can head to the Audabon Society near Plum Island for info about birds and see small exhibits.

Thanks for these! My kids and I are spending a month in southern Maine, where I grew up, and since I have not ever lived there w/kids I needed some ideas of how to keep them occupied on the colder New England summer days!

It will be fun taking them to places I used to go as a kid.
