We just found out we are moving from Phoenix, AZ to Portland this summer and I am trying to sort out the area since I have never set foot in Maine!    I'm starting with the usual stuff - where should we live (renting first) and what schools are AP-friendly/child-centered/parent involved.   My son will be 4 in the fall so looking for preschools or Pre-K program similar to what we had here, which was a wonderful school community with a play-based learning curriculum.   What are public schools like or should we go private/non profit?   We need to live somewhat close to downtown Portland for hub's job and on a bus line.

Looking for tips/advice from local mama's - much appreciated!

Would also love to get a feeling for the Portland area.  Are there AP friendly areas?  We are considering relocating from the NYC area.

Portland is a great city!  You might find some great resources at Birthroots in Portland.  They publish a resource guide for moms in the area that would have some good info for you.  I think you can even view the guide from their website.

I don't live in Maine, and don't know of anything specific you are looking for, BUT I just want to say Maine is a great state. Portland is a great city. I've been there numerous times, my mother is from Maine and goes often, and I have relatives who live there now. I love that state. It is beautiful. The coastline is beautiful. Lobster, LL Bean, small New England towns, great food in Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Acadia National Park. Blueberries. Pristinely clean. Clean, fresh air. I could go on and on. The downside, however, is that they have a lot of taxes. It's expensive there. And of course, the winter. It gets quite cold in the winter and they are long. Much, much different I'm sure from Phoenix Arizona. So, if you can deal with cold, long winters and high taxes, then you should be OK. All the other benefits of living in Maine far outweigh the very small list of bad things about it. Love, love Portland, Maine!!
