Hi, my husband just got orders to Kessler and I will be around 16 weeks when we arrive. I am looking for a midwife in the area that either does homebirth or hospital births. Are water births even an option in the hospitals? Any info anyone could share would be greatly appreciated!
Welcome to the MS Gulf Coast. I live in Ocean Springs. I am the president of MS Friends of Midwives. In MS, CNMs (Certified Nurse Midwives) only attend hospital births. We do have a group of midwives that work at Garden Park Medical Center. Don't be fooled by there name "birth center" it is just like any other hospital. http://gardenparkdoctors.com/office-locations/midwifery.dot
We also have a few direct entry (non-nurse) midwives that serve the gulf coast. They can all be found on the MS Friends of Midwives directory. I know that Renata Hillman, Tera Smith, and Colleen Tullis all work on the coast. In MS, direct entry midwifery is not licensed, thus we have a wide range of skills, experience, and training among midwives. As the consumer, you need to do the work to determine if a midwife meets your needs. I had a home birth in MS and would be happy to provide to talk to you more about it.
I am childbirth educator and doula. You can learn more about our services here: www.betterbeginningsMS.com
