THE MOTHER OF ALL RALLIES for home birth midwives (revisited)
Show the AMA & ACOG who's in charge of your baby's birth
Come to the Illinois Capitol Jan 12 or 13, 2009

(use search terms S. 2nd St. and E. Monroe St., Springfield, IL 62701 and bring quarters for the parking meters, or walk just 3 short blocks from the Amtrak train station!)

THIS JUST IN ...
Today we received a report from our lobbyist that our sponsors have determined it will be best to try to pass our bill to licensed certified professional midwives in Illinois, on the last two day of session, January 12 & 13.

We are holding a two-day rally to show legislators that we need midwives, and we need them now. Please invite everyone you know. Bring your children, your babies, your sister, and your friend. Just be there -- to make history!

If you live in anywhere in the midwest, you can make a huge difference in stopping organized medicine from blocking midwife licensure bills. This is your chance, no matter who you are, to show your support for home birth by helping the toughest state in the entire country to pass a CPM licensure law! We have the chance to set a precedent in the country, this first year after the AMA officially vowed to stop midwives. DON'T LET THE AMA HAVE THEIR WAY! COME SHOW YOUR SOLIDARITY WITH YOUR HOME BIRTH SISTERS!

A LITTLE HISTORY ...
In approximately the past ten years, the home state of the American Medical Association, Illinois, has LOST MORE THAN 25 HOME BIRTH PRACTICES. We are in desperate need of safe, legal access to home birth midwives.

After after three years of very intense work and negotiations, Illinois is THE FIRST STATE EVER to come to terms with the state's nursing groups.

Now that the nurses have dropped all their opposition, we have the best chance, literally, in history to pass a bill, but we can't count our chickens before they hatch! And that's why WE NEED YOU!!! No matter the weather, take a day out of your life to show our lawmakers that midwives matter!

SHE WAS THERE FOR YOU ...
When you were pregnant, your midwife was there for you. She was available and patient and there for your baby's birth. Now it's your chance (even if your "baby" is now grown) to show the AMA and legislators that licensing certified professional midwives is the right thing to do!

We are going to keep the rally simple. Just be there. You will see us wearing the black "got midwife?" pins. If you're from Illinois, we will help you find and meet with your state representative, and if you're form another state, your presence can really help show the whole nation that home birth is a necessary option, and legal access to home birth midwives should every woman's, baby's and family's right!

We would like to extend a special invitation to our plain clothes friends, but no matter what kind of clothes you wear, we need you. We need everybody to show Springfield how important this bill is!

Stay tuned for more details, and please plan to be part of this truly historic moment, and show your support for home birth!

See you there!

Are you familiar with the American Medical Association's official resolution to lobby against home birth midwives? http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=916496

Not only are AMA headquarters located here (so a victory will be symbolic), but also this will be the first piece of legislation voted on since the AMA passed their resolution. That's one of the reasons why we hope our sisters will join us in Illinois -- to show the AMA we will not stand for their policies!

We will be updating http://www.homebirthishealthy.org soon, so check in there! (And please consider supporting us in other ways, if you can't physically be here.)

I was just going to ask what some of the other way to support this are, beyond attending the rally? I work full-time, have a toddler, and live in Chicago, so it's extremely unlikely I could make it to Springfield, but I'd love to support this cause in other ways.

I just updated the webisite, http://www.HomeBirthIsHealthy.org and you can help us a lot by spreading the word about the action alert and the rally, plus donating to help us keep our lobbyist in Springfield (who's working now and has been talking to our sponsors, while they're on break from the impeachment committee today).

MommyDOK:

While the bill does allow a licensed midwife to provide prenatal care during the first pregnancy after a c-section, it also requires her transfer care for the birth. It was was disappointing when we realized that we would not be able to win that in this first round.

We believe that with licensure cpms will be much better able to form stronger relationships with other healthcare providers, "prove" themselves to the state, build a stronger infrastructure in order to make improvements in the future.

This is only the beginning ... even though it's the end of a very long, hard row.

Believe me, the AMA is looking to stop any cpm licensure at all. We have managed to obtain consensus for an otherwise excellent bill in a state well-known for having the toughest standards for many different professions. Organized medicine is expected to make a HUGE stand. They have 17 paid lobbyists. The one thing we have they they don't is YOU and your cute kids! Now it's time to push it over the top!

Please help us spread the word.

I'm already trying to find a way to get down there! Since before my daughter was born, I have been saying "I'm moving to another state before I ever have another!" My CNM-attended hospital birth went well, but I definitely would have preferred to have a more natural choice. Thanks for the organization!

I'll be there! I've been wanting to attend one of these rallies since day one but it never seemed to work out. Well....this time the stars are aligned.

Can anyone share details about how this will work? I'm a little nervous about the cold weather & I will have my 5.5, 4 & 20 month old with me. Is it hours & hours of standing outside? A set time when we all meet? Just trying to prepare myself!

Kids are very welcome. All activities will be inside. We are not marching or anything. Just come to the capitol, be prepared to go through security to enter the building, including putting your bags through an x-ray machine and walking through a metal detector. Once you're inside, go to the middle of teh building and look for the large group of homebirthy people wearing black buttons (and maybe black teeshirts) that say "got midwife?"

You don't have to show up as early as 10am. However, I would recommend you try to arrive by 11am or noon at the latest. If you live in Illinois, we will give you materials and instructions about how to find your state representative. Things will wrap up each day when the session adjourns for the day, so the times listed above are estimates, because their schedule is totally out of our control.

You might be able to see the House hearing or floor vote for the bill! (depending on which day you attend) Kids are allowed in the hearing rooms and the House and Senate Galleries -- although we do ask if your child/ren start to talk or fuss, you leave immediately since it is, technically, a legal proceeding. Discreet breastfeeding is fine anywhere in the capitol (by law). Other food or drinks should be consumed in the hallways for cafeterias.

The main purpose of being there is to talk with your own state rep and to show legislators how necessary licensure is in our state! They will notice a large group, and it will make a difference.

Dress in layers. Some parts of the capitol can be hot, and other areas are colder, like any old, big building.

HOPE YOU CAN COME!!!

We're all set! My best friend Paulina (who is seven months pregnant), myself, and my (will be) 5 month old daughter are planning to drive down on the 12th! I doubt we will make it for the first day as we are not earlybirds and my friend has an hour drive to pick me up in the city and then we will be making lots of stops. We are staying at the Marriott on the night of the 12th, so will be there on the 13th! I am looking forward to meeting like-minded mamas

ETA: we were going to make signs... would that be appropriate for indoors?

UPDATE!

Colette is probably super busy at the moment so I figured Id update for you ladies.

The Rally was pushed forward. It is now yesterday, today the 9th and the original date of the 12th. There won't be a rally on the 13th, that I've heard.

If anyone has any new info, please update.

This was the email I got today from my mw:

A lot of very positive work was done in the capitol today - work that moved the bill forward. Colette will be sending email out from the Coalition as soon a possible to fill you all in. However I'm sending a quick email now to let you know that on the advice of the Coalition's lobbyist and Rep. Julie Hamos, the bill's chief sponsor, the Springifield Rally has been postponed for approximately two weeks to maximize it's effectiveness.

Watch for email from the Coalition soon.

The January 12/13 rally has been temporarily postponed to sometime in early February. We will announce the exact date next week. The new date should hold. We regret having to change the date. We understand that a lot of you already had your travel plans set, but sometimes the legislative agenda takes on a life of its own, and now we must be flexible and respond to the circumstances dealt to us.

There was great progress made on our bill. We have an amazing group of sponsors, many of whom are working very hard on our bill, but we simply ran out of time with the impeachment proceedings and some procedural details for the bill. This means we will be reintroducing it in the next session, beginning when the newly elected state legislature is sworn in on January 14, 2009. Hopefully we will have the same bill number.

The good news is that we now have more time to talk with our state representatives. A few state representatives will not be returning, so find out if you have a new representative or not, and contact whoever will be your state representative in the new General Assembly.

The number one most important thing that must take place over the next few weeks -- KEEP TALKING WITH YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE!!! (and your family and friends). You should also touch base with your state senator to let them know they will be seeing the issue again, and you are still counting on their support, but please concentrate first on your state representative.

You can check gotmidwife.blogspot.com for updates, and try as I might, I cannot aways update each and every forum, so if you see something new that hasn't been posted here, please pass it along!

Thank you for your understanding and dedication to this important issue!!!

Wondering if there is a Yahoo group for this or if this site, gotmidwife.blogspot.com, is the only spot to check. I live in OH but have several family and friends in IL as this is where I am from originally. I emailed them and asked them to support it before the 13th so I want to do that again if needed.

Thanks, LM
