It's official.
The Missouri State Supreme Court upheld the decision to legalize Certified Professional Midwives in the state.

The opposition has 10 days to request a second hearing, but such requests are not usually granted by the Supreme Court.

10 days until the women and midwives of Missouri are free!

This is such happy news!! I was thinking about it the entire way home from work. I'm going to start looking into the possibility of switching to a midwife for the birth of my baby in December! If anyone has any recommendations on how to go about finding one in the St. Louis area I'd love to hear them!

Reiterating an email I just sent to STL ICAN:

I am so pleased for you (collectively), who fought the fight before I even knew there was a fight to be fought.

Congratulations, and thank you for fighting this fight on behalf of everyone, including the ignorant.

THIS IS SUCH FANTASTIC NEWS!!!!!

We in Iowa are just starting our efforts towards legalization and have such incredible respect for Friends of MO Midwives and the AMAZING WORK they have done in the last few years!! And kudos to Sen. Loudon for being such an awesome advocate for HOMEBIRTH AND MIDWIVES!!

Homebirth is already legal in Missouri, but midwives were not legally able to practice without being under a doctor. Now midwives can set up practice and do homebirths and I think hospital births without a doctor.

If I am informed about this as well as I think I am, to be perfectly legal under this legal provision, the midwife has to be a CPM--granted certificate of professional midwife (after taking a test and showing a certain amt of prenatal, birth and postpartum experience/skills) by NARM (North Amer. Registry of Midwives). None of the mws I am aware of in the St L area are CPMs (yet!). Just to clarify that point--and not that anyone is likely to be checking credentials under ordinary circumstances (anyone who's against hb, that is)

Still, this is GREAT news--and soon I'm sure the state will be full of CPMs!

I'm sooooo super excited about the victory here in Missouri. Now my midwife is legal.... yay!

As for someone asking about finding midwives in missouri check out this site (although their notice about CNM's being the only legal midwives is out of date now..!) http://missourimidwives.net/ Look for ones who have the credentials 'CPM' for legal midwives in missouri .

Just use the above link as a place to 'start' anyway.... try googling to find other resources for searching out local midwife practices as well.

Thanks for the link! I just looked, but unfortunately the closest midwife listed is 202 miles away from me. I'm in St. Louis. I'll bookmark it though with the hope that others will be added. I've googled as well, but I'm not having any luck. Hopefully once the 10 day waiting period is over I'll have more luck.

I've also learned that while I may be able to have a legal homebirth now, it might be difficult to have a midwife for a hospital birth since they don't have hospital privileges. Homebirth is not an option for me, so I may end up sticking with my OB.

No, they wouldn't meet the hospital's requirements for privileges. CPM's are almost exclusively homebirth or birth center based.

I am so so excited about this, but...

For those who are pg now and looking to have a "legal" midwife-attended hb in StL, I want to reiterate what was posted above. There aren't any CPMs here currently, afaik. I think that will change quickly, but maybe not as quickly as this fall. Your birth will be legal, but your midwife will still not be recognized by the state.

But that doesn't mean hb isn't still a great option!

Sorry to be a downer, I just felt the need to clarify. Back to the

Trying to get my bearings...

I just heard about this .... wooooo-hoooooo!

I believe there are only 2 CNMs in the state that do home births (so I heard) and I am lucky enough to live near one and I'm already working with her. I am so happy this opens up the options for women in the future. It is like pulling teeth to find the other midwives and now they can finally get their credentials and come out of hiding!!

I think that you can find a midwife through FOMMs - http://www.friendsofmomidwives.org/
Here, for instance, they have local meetings where you can meet up with the right people.

Like Ellie's Mom said, I don't think there are any CPMs because they didn't gain anything by being licensed. That will change soon and before long midwives will be able to advertise their services without fear of being targeted and prosecuted and it will be easier for women to choose a home birth and find a suitable midwife!!!!

This is wonderful, though unfortunately it's not a very viable option for me since I have mercycare plus and they won't cover anything. Thankfully my husband is an EMT and in class to become a paramedic! I'm planning to labor as long as possible at home, and I'd be quite happy to hb but I don't want to put to much pressure on myself.

If anyone knows of a midwife who would do a homebirth in mid-MO, like, say..Marshall/Sedalia/Warrensburg-ish..please let me know! I've looked through every directory of midwives I can find to no avail. I'm due at the end of October and it would be so amazing if I could find someone by then. Even DP is on board after seeing The Business of Being Born.

There is a birth center in Columbia. I'll bet you could contact them to get some leads. Here is the link: http://www.birthcolumbia.org/
