I have attended births as a doula and/or midwife assistant with Dottie, Jan, Merrie, and Laura. I primarily assist Merrie who very knowledgable and quite laid back. I love her but I also could be very biased because I spend most of my time with her. I have nothing negative to say about the others. I have also heard nothing but positive things about Jessica. I think it is going to boil down to who you click with personality wise. If you can give me some of the characteristics that you are looking for, then I would be glad to give you some more specific suggestions!

Here's the website for Jan Eklund http://www.jan-eklund-midwife.com/

I would honestly just set up a few interviews. There are some great questions to ask in the book Ina May's guide to childbirth (at the back).
I've talked to Dana, Jan and Jessica. It really just depends on what you're looking for, some of them I was way impressed with their website info etc, but it wasn't until I met them and spent some time with each that I was able to decide.

It's a personal choice. I'd interview at least 3. I have worked with some, and birthed with some. I've heard great reviews from the students in my childbirth classes. I think they all have their own strengths and you need to find someone whom you are comfortable with their skills (and back up situations) as well as someone you genuinely like to be around

happy birthing and congratulations!!
