A group of us in the Omaha-Lincoln area are hoping to found Nebraska's first Sudbury school.
The Sudbury model functions by a direct democracy where all individuals, adults and children, are recognized as equal persons, and each person is 1 vote. The entire community is responsible for the decisions that run the school, including which adults to hire on staff, how to spend the school's funds, creating rules, and exacting justice by due process.
The Sudbury paradigm holds that every child is inherently creative and inquisitive. They are already expert learners, and they already have the skills needed for adulthood--- they just need the experience. Children learn best when they are granted complete freedom to pursue activities that interest them. Therefore, a Sudbury school--- within the boundaries and responsibility of their democratic community--- allows its students unfettered freedom to go and do as they choose. There is no curriculum, no evaluations of any kind. The children, from age 4 to older adolescence, mix and mingle, learning from and leading each other. Adult staff are not teachers, but models of what it means to be an adult human being. They do not teach, guide, or interfere in any way. They only help when asked by another member of the community.
