I'm in desperate need of help with finding somebody who can do dreadlocks for me. I combed my 3 month old dreads out last night and now just don't feel in my own skin with 'normal' hair, I really need them back... I did dreadlocks myself back in March and from the very beginning I knew that the back would need to be redone eventually but I kept them because I thought I'd find someone rather quickly to help me fix the sectioning in the back. Well, I didn't (wasn't looking hard enough, I guess) and at 3 months it was time for some more serious maintenance. I figured there was no point in breaking my arms for a few hours if I still wasn't happy with the initial sectioning and wanted the dreadlocks to be re-done soon. So now they are gone...

If you personally have done dreadlocks or know someone who can, please let me know. I hope to have them back before our vacation in 2.5 weeks. Ideally, I'd trade my skills for someone locking my hair. Otherwise, I'd have to postpone getting dreadlocks until August, because right now we are trying to make sure we have enough $$ for the trip.

I can do a variety of different things in the following areas:

~ sewing/serging (including, but not not limited to - cloth diapers/wipes, slings, Mei Tais, recycling old t-shirts into kids clothes, etc.)

~ dyeing (both cotton and animal based fibers, like play silks, wool yarn etc.)

~ photography ( especially enjoy birth photography. no weddings/engagements, sorry)

~ knitting (including, but not limited to, longies/shorties to wear over cloth diapers, hats, etc.)

I'm always learning new skills and working on perfecting the ones I already have, so feel free to ask any specific questions you might have. I don't use my skills for selling things, so I have no 'past items' to share, but I do have some photos of things I've made for personal use, I'll be happy to share them if needed. Also, you can see some of those photos if you browse my blog: http://whitebirdbluesky.blogspot.com/

Thank you!
Olya

I get my hair done at Lunatic Fringe on 11th and one of the stylists there was rockin some awesome dreads. I asked my friend who does my hair about it and she's like "How old you think they are?!?" And I was thinking for sure they were at LEAST a few years... nope. Only a few months, they looked AMAZING. I know that she had the stylists she works with do them for her. Maybe you can call there and see if they offer it as a service?

I was actually trying to find this out the other day! I'm thinking about getting dreads - I don't know right now though because I go to BYU and "extreme hairstyles" don't fly here. I just know I'd get kicked out. :

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Girl or guy? And what race? Sorry to ask, but it really makes a difference here I want to go chat with the people in the "honor code" office, but as I already have too many piercings I don't really want them to notice Maybe I'll give them a call. Thanks though

I have been wanting dreads for YEARS. I have put them in twice, by myself, in the most sucky manner, so of course they all fell out. I just couldn't get them in by myself.

I will GLADLY help you put some in YOUR hair, if you can help get them in MY hair. Not professional, but dedicated.

I used to go to LF too, but when I was going, they weren't doing them, so My stylist has since moved so I haven't been there for over a year. I am also interested in leads on professional work too. My dh likes them, but won't help me.

My dh likes them too - I don't know if I' trust him to put them in, for that matter lol! I could get it down if I practiced first on some of that hair your buy at sallys. My hair is mid-back length, so you'd be in for a huge ordeal

My DH tried to help me too but couldn't get the hang of backcombing or palm-rolling. I'm looking forward to the next week, hopefully I'll get my dreadlocks back one way or the other

I'd really love to see them! I don't have the money for anything "extra" like that right now - but I can always dream, right?

before i was a nurse, i was a hair stylist. i could prolly do them for you if you're still looking. i am waiting for a surgery date on my right shoulder so it would have to happen soon, and might be hard to orchestrate with my schedule next week. if i can, i am more than willing.

Lunatic Fringe in Salt Lake (they're Eleventh location) does dreads as well as dread extensions. Unfortunately, just putting in dreads cost $100 an hour. I've never seen anyone with dreads from their so I don't know if they're good.

As far as BYU, I know a girl who goes there and she's seen a girl with dreads on campus several times, so that girl probably goes to school there.

100 an hour is kinda steep for my budget (my hair is mid/low-back) - but I bet they'd be nice! That's neat that there's at least a few people here with them at BYU. I think I'm going to the honor code office (lol) to see what they have to say. I'm applying for my major (2 year dietetics program after all my pre-reqs are done - woohoo!) in february, and I really don't want it to deter me from getting into my program, because a trivial thing like hair just might keep me from getting in here.

All this talk about dreads is making me want them I had them for a little while, and I really wish I would have let them stay in longer. At first it was to show myself that hair does not define me, and w/ having long hair (at the time) everyone wanted to always touch my hair. So I guess it was to show myself something. But then something came over me months later and I just had to have them out! So I washed and conditioned and repeated, and finally got them out. Now years later I am feeling them call me once again. Not so much to prove anything to myself, but to just go w/ what I feel. But something holds me back...and now for some reason it is society and the view "they" have on "different". Now living in the south I am aware of certain things I didn't even have to notice or become concerned about before. Not sure why I let this affect me? So here I am at a crossroads...to dread or not to dread???

It's been a while since you posted this but I am going to BYU as a grad student this fall, and really want to start dreads right now. Did you ever find an answer? I called in and the lady said "no dreads" but I don't know if I can wait two years! I'm female, and caucasian. Anyway, let me know what you think? Thanks!
