hello hello hello is there anybody outhere? ok enough pink floyd. We are renting a duplex with a sizable patio and a back yard the size of my sons small bedroom. I REALLY want to grow as much of our own food as possible. Is anyone else around here doing the same with a similar situation?

Hello Hello -
I did when we were renting. I once grew a beautiful garden in my apartment that had no patio or back yard.

I planted my tomotoes in 5 gal buckets I found and my herbs in milk jugs. I did build a small garden plot out of scrap wood for my strawberries and sat it next to the dumpsters. The nieghbors loved it!! I set out patio chairs and painted a moral on a wal behind the dumpster to make it more appealing. It actually turned out to be a neat spot. My daughter loved it. though in the hot hot summer it got a bit smelly

The most important thing to remember is to drill drainage holes in all of your containers. You can also do alot of square foot gardening by trailing your plants (squash, tomatoes, beans) up trellises. By going up you add lots of space.

Hope this helps. If you are ever in the SLC area you are always welcome to stop on by one of our gatherings!!!

Maybe for the March gathering we can do it on patio gardens since there are some of us who live in apartments or condos...? Just a thought. It would be a great time to discuss it because that will be about the time to start some seedlings indoors

Yeah, we'll be there I would love a meeting about patio gardens. I tried to do a small herb container garden last year, but I could use some tips since all of the plants died except one.

Oh, I'm really interested in the backyard chickens as we're planning to get chickens this year only Saturday is Bald Eagle Day and my 6 year old wants to go bald eagle sighting. Can we come late? Not sure how long we'll be out and about, where we're going is about an hour and a half drive.

Let's not forget knitting! Didn't I hear someone mention that at the last meeting? I really want to learn.
Also, for a future meeting I might be able to get some people to come talk to us about urban beekeeping. We're getting a hive through Hansen Hives (they maintain it initially, but we will probably buy it from them eventually). The bees will be here in March or April, I can't wait!

So a Chicken Knitting gathering it is!!!
I am sure my chicks will greatly appreciate a pair of handmade slippers!!!

I have a few extra knitting needles but no yarn so bring your needles and some yarn because we are going to be making the ugliest (which makes them cute) slippers ever!!! I will see if I can get my mega knitting mamma friend to come as well.

As for Backyard Chickends...I was going to have informational materials for people to browse and then I thought it would be fun to design a coop. Building the coop may have to be another UUH get together project (hint hint)

I will PM my address later night!

Wow, if I actually learned to knit, it would be a miracle. I have a family full of knitters and I merely "pretend" to crochet. I must be seriously ADD, because if a craft takes TIME? I just don't stick with it. I'm so impatient, I want INSTANT results. :

I think I will take pictures of my sad starting of a coop and bring it. I will give it this, it's made of 100% recycled materials. And it shows. Hey, Paint will help, right?
Are we still ordering fancy chickens?

I had fun at the seed swap. Turns out, I will only have a packet or two of specialty stuff that I want to buy. I actually got MY ENTIRE SEED STOCK there! I just saved myself a LOT of money! I have cleaned out my back room and set up shelving in there for seed starts. I am so ready!

Speaking of bees again... I can see why hosting a hive would be preferable/great option. I'm looking at buying hives and WOW cha ching.. I just REALLY want the honey tho. You guys get ANY of the honey? A discount? Anything? You get to learn on the spot-that's worth something! What will they charge you to buy the hives from them afterward?

I should check in more often. I'd be interested in BY chickens and knitting (I would love a child-friendly knitting group). Sadly, I don' tknow if I can make it on the 7th--but I'll try.

I also mourn that my twins aren't in cloth anymore. We never got to attend cloth diaper parties when they had thier fluffy bums. I never met anybody IRL that cloth diapered. Just lonely me. So cool.

Just to let everyone know, we have decided to have two UUH get togethers a month so that more people may be able to attend.

The goal is to host one on the weekends for weekday working folks and of course we will still host the Wednesday get togethers.

So rest assured; if you miss one there will be a second chance!!!

Lol, not a MAKING party, just one to see all the different kinds and get to talk to mamas that do it or are interested in cding. One mama has a store so she's hosting. I'm really hoping some mamas bring their little fluffy bums, I can't wait!

I don't know yet if I am going to go to this UUH gathering, or the CD one.. I love chickens, but as much as I want some, DH is sooooo not into having chickens (he has NO choice about having a goat some day though!)

Lol, have your dh talk to my dh! Mine LOVES having our chickens. It was actually his idea in the first place and he made the coop himself and we just let the chickens take care of themselves. They are really not that much work (if that's what he's worried about).

Hey Ladies-
So my knitting mama friend can not make it and since I am also a novice (how do you cast on again?) we will not be knitting on Saturday.

You can still bring needles and yarn if you would like to knit while we talk about other stuff but the how to's of knitting will have to be for another time...

But do not fret....My hubby has offered to talk about container gardening which I believe many of you have asked about. I had to talk him down from giving a power point on the subject :

Also we will still be talking about Backyard Chickens. I am excited to design coops!!!

Till Saturday!
