I am coming to CA for the summer - 3-6 months. I am bringing me and my children - a life-learning/unschooling lot!. - this will be an extended vacay adventure for us.

We are planning on visiting lots of natural experiences- like seeing the redwoods and seqouia's. the coast, the special things CA has to offer :)

I would like to rent a simple house - preferably with a little land or a decent yard with a fence - and not too far from a Farmers market!

Alright- that's the wish list - I look forward to your suggestions!

Have you looked into Sacramento?  It's central, has several great farmer's markets, and is very kid-friendly.  You're most likely to find a rental deal in the med-center area (gentrifying, but lots of families), there is a farmer's market on Saturday mornings near a great coffee shop, etc.  If you want to spend a little more, midtown is also nice and walkable, but you are less likely to get a yard.  You might also look in Rancho Cordova or Carmichal if you want more space, but it's unlikely either is going to get you within walking distance of a farmers market.
