Please circulate this email to any other lists you are on so that we may reach as many women as possible. Thanks.

<<I'm a lawyer with the Northwest Women's Law Center in Seattle. I'm
investigating possible legal responses to bans on vaginal birth after
cesarean at hospitals in the northwest states - Alaska, Idaho, Montana,
Washington and Oregon. If you are currently pregnant and want to have a
VBAC, but are facing a hospital policy that would require you to have a
c-section regardless of whether you want it and whether it is medically
necessary, and are willing to consider working with a lawyer on this, we'd like to talk with you. Please email us at [email protected] Our services will be provided free of charge. >>

That is because we have been looking for women since last July without any success. I've been leading the national VBACtivism effort since early 2005 and searched for a long time to find a pro-bono lawyer willing to help. It is extremely frustrating to me to finally have one on board and yet not be able to find a VBAC denied mom for her to work with. Women have complained to ICAN for a long time that they don't have access to VBAC, that they would have to get in their cars and drive 8 hours in labor to get to a VBAC accepting hospital, etc. etc. but now that we have legal help for them they are no where to be found. Please do help spread the word.

What exactly are you looking for? total bans?
Here in Alaska most hospitals will take VBAC women. I think only one does not. However, the state regulations forbid Midwives from attending out-of-hospital VBACs.
can we fight that???

Do we have to be pregnant? Do we have to reside in that state that has a VBAC ban?

I would LOVE to get the hospital in Bozeman MT to allow VBACs. But I dont live there.

The International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) recently resurveyed the country for VBAC bans. The following AK hospitals are listed as having VBAC bans in place according to the ICAN VBAC ban policy database:

Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Hospital Bethel Alaska Banned
Bartlett Regional Hospital Juneau Alaska Banned
Kanakanak Hospital Dillingham Alaska Banned
Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center Kodiak Alaska Banned
Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital Barrow Alaska Banned

For our purposes we are seeking women facing hospital bans that are official hospital policy (vs. just being denied VBAC due to provider preferences). We are not able to help with the homebirth midwifery issue.

The woman has to be pregnant and facing the ban. If you are planning a future pregnancy then please do let us know when you conceive. You don't have to live in the state where the ban is - just be planning on birthing at the hospital that bans.

If you want to help us find MT moms affected by that ban by making phone calls and sending emails to women in that area then that would be very welcome.
