I have a Honda Element. I really like it, but in a few years we'll need something that seats more than 4. (The back seat is only a 2 seater.) I also plan on keeping on roads (paved or otherwise). It has handled pretty rustic dirt roads well, but I've never tried deep mud or really angled stuff. I'm glad to know that the newer AWD is not full-time AWD.

We had two trucks when we were up there. Mine is a crew cab Ford F-250 diesel. Being diesel, I get better mileage than a gas, and it being manual, I get better mileage than an automatic. The manual is also really good for the rare occasion I needed to get unstuck (this was usually in my driveway, actually). I could use 2wd most of the winter and turn on the 4wd when I needed it. I averaged about 17 mpg, which, no is not a lot, but I liked having more control over how the truck handled than you get with most vehicles. But they are not cheap. They start at almost 40k new. We got ours used for almost 25k.

I have heard absolutely fabulous things about the Subaru vehicles. They hold their value better than any other affordable vehicle, are well made, drive well, and have very high safety ratings.

Planting garlic: order your garlic - a good place is www.filareefarm.com and you want to order now as they are already sold out of some varieties. You'll want to plant it as soon as it gets to you. Filaree starts shipping at the end of August. It may not hurt to mention you are in AK when you order. Chesnok Red is what we grew last year and should still be available. They're happy to answer any questions if you call them. Plant it pretty deep into the ground. Cover the bed with mulch or dry leaves/grass clippings just before the snow flies. You'll see a "flowering" plant show up when the ground thaws and you'll want to clip those off. You can wait til the plants turn brown or until the end of the growing season and then you can harvest them. Don't put them into storage wet - let them dry out well.

Harvested a 3 pound 4oz. zucchini the other night and another one tonight.

V interesting about the garlic. I never knew why mine wouldn't work. I may try that link to order--thanks!

So my 11yo and I love to rent the Star Trek seasons from the library.. we are on the aqua one... TNG 5? I think? Anyway, we were watching the episode where the ship is attacked, and everyone loses their memory..

William T Riker (otherwise known as "number 1") learns he was born in Alaska.. I looked it up, and sure enough, his character was supposedly born in Valdez.. :

(I was probably the only person that didn't realize that until now, but I always knew there was a reason I liked him.. )

Does she have a case worker with DHS? If so, she needs to contact her immediatly. They have emergency funds. She can get into a rent subsidized apartment but it takes a couple of weeks for the application process.

If I had a nursling, I would love to go, but seeing lots of infants and no one to nurse would probably not be very good for my psychological health atm..

Y'know, two of my sisters (twins - 17 y/o) work there, too. One is a lifeguard and the other works in the food court/cafe. I wonder if there is any written "policy"...? I'll see if they can check it out.

I'm amazed at this guy's audacity. He had no clue what he was getting himself into, eh? I don't have any nurslings, either, but I'd go to support the cause!

Interesting about H2Oasis. I'll be interested in hearing what your sisters tell you. I'll go if a bunch of you all decide to go as well for a nurse in sort of deal or whatnot.

Thanks for the info on the garlic. I'm going to order some more than likely and would love love love to be able to have my very own garlic next year from the garden.

RE: H2Oasis - I checked with one of my sisters this AM. She said this all started because the mother was "completely exposing herself and wouldn't cover up." Apparently there is no written policy, but they ask for discretion since it is a "family establishment."

She's just repeating the line she was fed, of course - and said they (the employees) are not asked/directed to tell nursing mothers to go anywhere, ie. upstairs, away from "the deck" or whatnot.
