Oh no! I'm sorry, Tammy. I knew something didn't look right to me when I saw your initial post but it didn't click with me that the day and date didn't match up!

That is awesome! We are not hunters, we prefer to "gather".

Gather fish and moose and caribou from our neighbors and friends! LOL

We're hunters AND gatherers as well as farmers. We were lucky enough to get a sheep already too. Today I made a trip to town to swap basil and chicken for raspberries and halibut. And the winter squash is ripening! Yay fall!

I'm another gatherer. I swear, if I had to rely on the land for my survival, I'd become a vegetarian in a heart beat. I can't eat anything that I know I'm responsible for it's death. I've even had to give away the halibut I caught, because I just *couldn't* eat it. I have issues! LOL I have zero problem buying it out of the meat case!

How do you who cloth diaper dry your diapers in the winter? I know that line drying them in the sun is better for them, but it seems like a lost cause in the winter.

Do you just hang them up in the bathroom? Or to get the sunlight, hang them up in the window?

I just put 'em in the dryer. I do love hanging diapers on the line in the summertime, though!

I put mine in the dryer too.

My diapers stink right now and I just stripped them. They have the pee stink smell to them but I know they're really clean and all. I clean them how it's recommended... cold rinse, hot wash with dye free detergent, rinse rinse rinse. Any recommendations on what I can try to get rid of the smell? Another CD ?... I have BG2 and 3's... they never stay velcroed in the laundry or dryer anymore. Any idea why and how I can remedy the situation?

What stinks - the inserts or the dipes? Are you using MF inserts? Have you tried boiling them and then running them through a rinse cycle (sounds gross, but it works!) ETA: Don't boil the BG's without checking if it's safe -- the snaps might melt, iirc...

What detergent are you using?

Maybe sunning would help, if we get any more sun...

Have you tried vinegar in the rinse?

How did you strip them, and did you watch to make sure there were no suds in the rinse? Vinegar in the rinse can help.

As to how to dry them in the winter, I always just put mine in the dryer because I don't like crunchy diapers. Sometimes I would hang them on the clothes bars in front of the wood stove. You can freeze dry them outside. My MIL has never owned a dryer and her 4 were all in cloth. Now, she lives in Michigan, not Alaska, but it does get cold there, if not as cold.

Are you certain you aren't using too much detergent?

When I washed mine (because I had a front loader that doesn't have as much water as a traditional machine) I'd run a rinse cycle with baking soda and vinegar, then I'd run the super super long cycle with an extra rinse and I used 2 tablespoons of soap.

Doing that, I only had to strip my hemp inserts once... and the boiling them did the trick.

Diaper stink...BTDT and it's not any easier when you live in Alaska.

I finally had to give up on cloth (all kinds) because Iris reacted SO badly to all of it. (She had weeping sores that only healed when we put her in disposables...horrible).

The stink especially stuck with the homemade fleece pocket dipes (which I lovingly sewed for years and years for each child)...I gave them away and hope they smell better somewhere else.

We stripped everything, we did vinegar rinses, we sun dried in the summer, you name it.

They still stunk. I don't know why.

I've never sunned my diapers. When I strip them I use dawn and do a ton of rinses (and check for suds). I'm not sure if both stink or one or the other. I'll have to check.
i normally use purex free and clear. And I always do extra rinses to get all the suds out. I haven't tried boiling or vinegar.

One other thing I tried was tea tree oil. The downside, is TTO by itself stinks :

I don't know if the detergent makes a difference (I would think it wouldn't) but I used plain ol tide and it worked wonders.

Well, I've had my membranes stripped, bloody show, and I just lost my mucous plug (all in the last 24 hours) so with any luck I'll be able to put all this diaper advice to use soon! Thanks guys!

I know none of these signs are anything definite, but it's still exciting to think that something COULD be happening soon.

For us, detergent makes a difference. Different detergents react differently with fabrics and water. We use plain Cheer. I've tried Planet, Seventh Generation, and Arm and Hammer and they didn't get my diapers clean, though they seemed to do fine on our clothes. All (both regular and the Free and Clear) seemed to get the diapers clean, but they made Natalie's bottom bright red (yes, even the Free and Clear). We don't use Tide because my skin can't handle it. The plain blue Cheer is the only thing we've found that cleans the diapers and clothes and doesn't bother anyone's skin.

All Free & Clear has brighteners that can cause buildup and stink. I am using baking soda in the wash and a tbspoon of vinegar in the rinse.

I've had different results when I switched detergents--polkadotsandpinstripes.com has a GREAT list of detergents (a 1-5 stars rating on each for use with cloth diapers) and that has been really helpful for me.
I've also had different results with different types of diapers. What are yours made with? If I recall correctly BGs are PUL/microfleece with microfiber inserts, aren't they? IME synthetic fabrics get (and retain) stink a LOT worse than natural fabrics. It's basically pushed me to switch my stash away from microfleece/microfiber toward bamboo/hemp/cotton (even though the natural fibers typically cost a bit more) because they just get cleaner.
Oh, and as for the velcro thing...yeah, I found that after a few months of washing my laundry tabs didn't stay stuck closed so well anymroe either. I'm pretty wholly converted to snaps for that reason alone.

I do put them in the drier, but anything with staining gets set on a sunny windowsill to de-stain once it's dry...in my last apartment I'd have to leave it there for several days cuz we were in southeast and there was NO sun even on non-rainy days...but here in Homer things are looking much more promising in that regard
The line-drying is the ONLY thing I can think of that I miss about utah. :

Oh yeah, we're here in Homer now, getting all settled in (we have a bed and a kitchen table but no couch or desk or other furniture...the laptop is sitting on a camping cooler right now ) Thus far we LOVE it here, and are already talking about staying for years if not forever.
I'm working on finding a prenatal/birth care provider now...I've talked with the two MDC mamas I could find who live/have lived in Homer, and also with my landlady (who has a 6mo) and another lady up the street... Since we are only 5 min from the hospital though I think homebirth *may* be an option after all (DH feels really uncomfortable about it unless backup is readily available, and I think that's a valid worry...things don't usually go wrong, but sometimes they do and I agree it's good to be prepared about those things). So anyway we have an appointment to meet the local homebirth midwife next week. My landlady said she actually drove to the birth center in soldotna...I've kinda considered that, but it's a 90 min drive each way and while I could do that for one-time for delivery, I'm not sure I want to commit to doing it for all the prenatal appointments...that's a LOT of driving. I hear that the local OB is pretty good too...but the more I think about it the more I'm feeling drawn toward homebirthing this time, which is kindof exciting, I just need to be able to click with the midwife. (If my last birth taught me anythign it was that personal connection is more important than resume/experience in a birth provider...I have regretted my doula choice over and over because we chose the experienced one and when it came down to labor she drove me kinda nuts )

ETA, the fact that my landlady went to the birth center is nice because it lets me know that they won't be freaked out if we HB

Here's an unrelated question for everybody--when do they come out with the announcement of how much the PFDs will be this year? (This is our first year getting them ) We are kinda counting on ours to *ahem* buy a little furniture and it would be nice to know how much to expect so that we can start shopping appropriately.

I've had to strip my BG2 a few times - using the Dawn and multiple rinses. I also had the pee smell even fresh & warm from the dryer. I have a front loader and I found that its low water level was likely the cause - detergent just didn't rinse clean enough. So now here's my routine:
1) Detergent: Biokleen or Country Save, 1/2 the recommended amount
2) Bac-Out in the "bleach" compartment. About 1 tsp. and vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. (Vinegar helps detergent rinse better.)
3) I set a "pre-wash" cycle (its cold water), run the regular "whites/hot wash" and then set an "extra rinse" cycle (also cold).
4) About once a month I run the dipes on the sanitize cycle (super hot water) with no soaps.

Also - I HATE VELCRO. The only velcro I'm planning on using are some fitted dipes I really liked for my son that fit from about 3 months to 6 months. Their velco is in little corners that you can fold over to cover up the velcro during the wash. And since they are fitteds, the cover protects little thighs if it loosens. (If anybody is interested in some cheap BG2...)

Speaking of - Anybody know of any charity (in Anchorage) that might pass on used cloth dipes to a family in need? If I don't sell, I'd prefer to give them to an organization that will give them away - not just Value Village them.

I know there is a pregnancy services center in Wasilla that will take donations of clothes and diapers, though I don't know about cloth. I would assume there would be something similar in Anchorage, but don't know for certain. You could try checking with some of the local churches. Or call the place in Wasilla, though I don't have their number. They are called Heartreach.

I think the amount is announced mid September, right before the first wave of dividends are distributed. It's speculated to be around $1200 this year according to this article-

$1200 I can work with *whew*
After last year being so high and gas prices coming down this year, someone was telling me she figured it would be more like $600. That had me a little nervous. We have been hoping for $1000ish because we desperately need a couch plus we're really hoping to pay off a credit card that has about $2000 on it. Oh, and a carseat. Yeah, need to buy a carseat for the wee one... It sounds like we are likely to be ok. ::::::::

and I got (re)enrolled for WIC here today. I didn't know Alaska WIC was giving vouchers for Farmer's Markets! That is SOO great! Better still is that there's only a month of the FM left here, but I still got the whole summer amount (they just do $25/person for the summer, but me plus Bear = $50 with only a month left to spend it!). I'm gonna enjoy this!
