We have a companion ticket to use with Alaska Air, and can get the other ticket for $209.

Anyone know of a place to stay for 7-10 days in October, that will not break the bank?
It would be nice to keep the whole trip around $1,000 if possible.
Is this even possible?

Oh, and I have food allergies, so it would be best to have a place with a kitchenette

Um, I don't want to be a bummer but... The WHOLE TRIP only $1000? That includes the plane ticket?

I'm not positive about the outer islands... But...On Oahu (the one with Honolulu and Waikiki)... Even if you COULD find a hotel room for less than $100 a night, (which is doubtful) you wouldn't be able to afford the food for a week, even cooking, on $1000 total.

If you could swing $1500-1700 for the whole trip, your chances of staying within that are much better, but still pretty iffy. Hotel rooms out here run, on average, between $170-500 a night. There's a few places where you can get a room for $150 a night if you have a discount card like AAA.

Are there any options, anywhere, for camping? I like it anywhere, beach, inland, mountains, whatever.

Are you Military? The only good campgrounds that have a kitchenette, etc. are military.

Also, for straight-up camping, unless you are on base/military or willing to live among the homeless, there are no campgrounds that are open 7 days a week, at least, on Oahu. (We looked into this for my sister when she was considering flying out here to get married in August.)

www.vrbo.com has vacation rentals all over Hawaii. We've found awesome deals and had great experiences.

To clarify....
We have a $50 companion fare, and the other ticket would be $209.
And I am not tallking about including that air fare in the $1,000.
I found a very nice family owned hotel that has rooms with kitchens for $96 per night.
We would shop at Costco for food.
We do not eat any processed foods, so that cuts cost a great deal right there. No $9 boxes of cheerios for us

It does look like we will be going to Michigan instead though ;o)
Dh's parents are going to need a great deal of help getting ready for winter.
I would feel so very guilty going to Hawaii instead.

I did come up with a plan since I wrote this yesterday.
I am a WAPF chapter leader, and I have counterparts in Hawaii.
Many of us have talked about vacation exchanges.
There is a lady in Australia that wants to do just this with us.
Now I just need to get that same plan going in Hawaii!

If all you want is cheap, you could stay at one of he hostels here. Probably Hilo would be the cheapest place to stay in the whole state. Check out the Hilo Bay Hostel. They have the best prices and are very clean and recommended.

Plus, if you stay in Hilo, you can go see the volcano You can't do that if you are staying on any of the other islands.
