It’s time! Many of you have already heard about this…its official (mainly because we now have a name). The Alaska Birth Book Project is:

A collection of happy birth stories from women who have given birth in the state of Alaska.

As a childbirth educator, I’m speaking with so many women who just “want to know”. Alaskan women want to be given options in the world of labor and birth. They want to understand that they are in control, cesarean’s are NOT okay, and birthing at home, a birth center, or even a hospital are conscious choices to be made. And even more importantly, happy births are possible and they happen all the time!

What is a happy birth? It’s a birth that has joy. If you’re like me joy and happiness weren’t apart of the labor process but overwhelmingly present afterward. If you’re like Maddie joy happened after she told her doctor to “f- off”, and if you’re like Ryan joy happened during the orgasm at 8cm. A happy birth is one you’re escatic about years down the road.

My goal is to collect 50+ stories from women all over Alaska who’ve had a happy Alaskan birth. This will be made into a book published here in the state. Ideally, a portion of the proceeds would benefit The Alaska Birth Network and be provided for free or at low cost to lower income families. All Alaskan women and families will benefit from knowing that birth can be a joyous event because they make it so.

With that said: I’m collecting happy birth stories from women who have given birth in Alaska! If you have a birth story you would like to share, I would be honored if you would let me share it with others. Anonymous stories are welcome too!

Here are the guidelines:

1. The birth must take place in Alaska or on the way to Alaska.

2. The labor and birth must be happy. If your birth ended in cesarean and you are angered by it, this is not a place for your story. If your birth ended in a cesarean and you were angered and now empowered by the experience, we’d love to hear it.

3. Anyone can write a birth story. Dads, siblings, grandparents, and moms. We’d love to hear from everyone. If you’ve attended a happy birth in Alaska, you can write a story and submit it for publishing.

4. Submissions are to be made as soon as possible. As soon as we collect approximately 200 stories, we will not be excepting any more.

5. Submissions can be 1 paragragh to 2 pages in length. Creativity is welcome! If your story is best portrayed in a photo, painting, poem etc. please summit it (or a picture of it)!

6. Hospital births, home births, birth center births, unassisted births, VBAC births… ALL are welcome!

7. Please understand that you are submitting a story to be published! If you do not want to use your name, you are welcome to remain anonymous. If you are not the mother writing the story, please submit written permission from the mother (and sent to us) or the names in your story will be changed (upon your agreement). We may contact you at a later date for release papers… who knows.

8. More than one story is welcome if you’ve have more than one birth.

9. Be honest. If you barfed and it was a big part of your birth experience, don’t leave it out of the story because it doesn’t sound “happy”. It happens and women should know that it does!

10. PLEASE send your story in this format:

-Your Name: (say anonymous here if you choose)
-Your Position in Birth: (mom, dad, sister, Doula etc)
-Date of Birth:
-Place of Birth: (Providence, One Family Birth Center, Home etc)
-Title of Story:

To all of you who have already made the submission, thank you. And you all who will submit shortly: I am so excited to read them!
