Kids had a blast this weekend - we did the school carnival on Friday night, West Valley and dorm T or Ting on Saturday and church trunk or treat and Bentley yesterday. DS loved being Scooby Doo, walked around holding his tail and asking for Scooby snacks...it was hilarious.

Our church got broken into again on Friday night/Sat. morning. The damage is amazing and most is in the daycare, which is just so sad.

Baby is doing well, ultrasound next Monday. I'm dropping chiro for now and am looking for a good physical therapist if anyone has suggestions.

rabrog- Are you in Anchorage or the Valley? I know of two good physical therapists but they are in the Valley

McKittre(from the October thread)- I think Prov has one of the higher c/s rates so one of the other hospitals. I found this link...the rates are from 2008 but still...crazy. I think I'd show up at a birth center...http://www.theunnecesarean.com/blog/...ital-2008.html

I'm doing okay...ready to be out of my first trimester all ready. But have been having better days lately so I'm getting close.

Would a birth center take someone they didn't know showing up saying "Hi, I'm in labor now"? If so, can I have a few names of ones that might?

if I was in Anchorage and had to show up in labor to just some random place, I'd probably go to Prov because I didn't care for AK Regional when I was there (for non L&D related stuff). I actually delivered a baby at Prov in 2004 and while it wasn't awesome, they did get the job done. Doesn't sound like an ideal circumstance in any event.

From the prior thread, I'm surprised their combined c/s rate is 50%ish. Do you have documentation that reflects that? I didn't know the state compiled statistics excluded repeat c/s from the total... so those are only primary c/s? Of course, I chose to stay/deliver at a hospital that didn't offer epidurals and had a 4-6% c/s rate and I still ended up with a c/s... so that's where I'm coming from...

Mckittre - I doubt a birth center would accept you as a patient showing up in labor at their center. The ones I've had experience with have you as a patient, need your records to show an acceptable level of risk, etc... that and they only accepted X number of patients per month and were booked up fairly far in advance. Any chance you could do a flight instead of a drive? I seem to recall the flight from Anchorage to Homer was 40ish minutes or so...

I have some info but I'm not sure if it's against the confidentiality clause to share. I'll have to check. I have no idea how the state compiles their data.

I'm actually planning to give birth in Homer, but will likely be making a one day trip to Anchorage when I'm 38 weeks pregnant, and I want to have a backup plan in case that happens to be the day. The big hospitals with high c-section rates scare me!
I can't speak to Anchorage, but, as someone who gave birth in Homer a year ago, I sure hope you make it back down. I sure had a great experience. (are you planning home or hospital? I hear the hospital is quite nice, I opted for home and that was awesome)

The information I got was from a nurse that works at Prov. She only told me they were looking at a 50% c-section rate in the future so they were working on building a surgical suite to the L&D unit. I have no factual data to back that up.

As much as I'd love to say that any midwife worth her salt, would not turn away a laboring women, they have rules, regulations and liability issues. Ethically I'd imagine they would make sure you were stable and help you get a transport to the hospital.

I'm pretty certain they'd just refer you to the nearest hospital's L&D.

mckittre - what if you called and gave them a heads up that you might be there? If you picked birthcenter in anchorage, went ahead and transferred your records and gave them your info / insurance info etc etc they might be okay with helping you. Covers their butt because they have your records and know you can legally birth there and gives them notice that you MIGHT need them.

Are you a VBAC? If so, there is no way they would see if they knew you were coming. But if you are not, then I agree with the above idea.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. Obviously my hope is not to need any of this, and just to make it back to Homer, but better to think about it than not.
I'm not high risk in any way so far as I know - have one son, his birth was uneventful.

I'm in Fbks. I'll have to start looking for a phys. therapist next week. I canned my chiro appt. this week as I just can't see how adjustments are good given the issues already in my pregnancy. Second u/s is Monday and my next appt. is the 15th so hopefully I'll have more info then. I know I won't really know anything until I meet with the OB in December...it's getting hard not knowing what to expect.

WOW, it sure looked like Christmas time here this morning we are up on the hill in Homer and got about 14 inches of snow in the last 2 days. Most of it last night. I looked at hubby this morning and said " I think I will stay inside and make bread today." I love to look at the snow but am not a big fan of being out in it when it is coming down that hard.

All is well here, So far the pregnancy is going along good. We found out we are having a girl so we are really happy about that. The morning sickness is slowly going away but I still have days that I just feel like yuck.

Is everyone settling into their winter schedules?

Hey ladies
We had a good time at Trick or tReat street in ANC. Definitely will do it again next year, WE skipped the 31st though. The girls can't eat much of the candy and I don't want them to eat most of what they can!! We traded my 4 yr old's candy for a trip to kid to kid!! SHe loved it.

And now I'm at Prov with a gallbladder attack. I am getting it removed today. I tried going the natural route but I didn't follow through so here I am. As my DH said, "Well I guess this is a natural consequence, right?" Do any of you know of okay foods to eat after surgery? I am having chicken broth and an odowalla drink but I'm thinking about my next meals as well. I haven't eaten anything since 10 pm on Thursday so I'm a little bit hungry!!!
Stay warm and have fun in the snow!!

I'm not sure what is good to eat but I know they usually recommend bland and liquidy.

We'll be traveling to Fbks for Thanksgiving. We've never been, so we're pretty excited. We're flying up from Anchorage (driving from Soldotna) and then Sunday we are taking the winter train back down to Anchorage.

Anything we simply must do or see while we're there? We're visiting family, but I'm up for anything!

AWESOME info, 1stimestar! Would you say that the museum experiences are good for a 3 and 1 yo tagging along? As in, can they touch stuff, or is it more for adults? I've heard really good things about the Museum of the north, but the cultural center sounds like a good option too.

Also, sorry if TMI, but is there anywhere in town where I can get a Diva Cup? There isn't down her on the peninsula, and we won't really be in ANC long enough to track one down.

Thanks again!

We're in need of an orthodontist. We only have DKC, and that leaves us with a very limited number of orthodontists... There was ONE in soldotna, but he's not accepting new clients right now... so we're looking at the ones in Anchorage/Eagle River. I'm wondering if anybody can tell me anything about any of these folks--good/bad/ugly? We're going to talk to the orthodontist who is here in Homer and see if we can convince him to start taking DKC, and we'll talk to the other two in Soldotna as well, but it looks like it may be anchorage...
The orthos on the list are:
Michael Koropp
Robert Felker
Jack Duclos
Jeff Symonds
Derek Priebe
Eldon Dekay

There is a guy in Palmer, named Arlen, who is always at the fair and makes amazing pottery...but I can't find his contact info. I don't know if he sells at any stores though. The name of his studio is Arlen's Pottery Studio. But that's Palmer...I don't know in Anchorage/ER.

Subbing.

I'll ask at work about orthodontists who take DKC.

Took LO to a well baby visit to which the ped joked that LO wasn't supposed to be sick. He has another ear infection. I hope the antibiotics work this time.

Be safe out there!

it looks like we'll probably be in Anch for 3-4 days in december (the week of the 15th). We will be doing the ortho appt, and a little shopping, and seeing a friend... but if some of you who live in that neighborhood would like to arrange some kind of shindig, I'd love to hang out. orngbiggrin.gif

my 3yo has an ear infection. first one i've ever had to deal with. greensad.gif I guess i should count my blessings rather than whining eh?

So, my Daughter was to Coombs, for her braces. I do not know if they do DKC but they were great people and did excellent work

Looking good! Maybe someday I'll put my mug up for you all to see.
