Hi Fern!

I lived in Kaslo for the first four or so years of my life... I love the town. Enjoy yourself - I'm sure you'll have lots of like-minded friends soon!

I haven't been back since the summer before last, when I took the kids to the beach and the playground and out for ice cream. It really hasn't changed much in 30 years!

I really love the drive from Kaslo over the top to New Denver. Fish and Bear Lakes are so beautiful!

I'm a wee tiny bit jealous that you are moving there! Say Hi to it for me...

I'm a West Kootenay girl! I grew up in Salmo, just moved to Burnaby from Nelson a few months ago... Spent a lot of time in Castlegar going to school and was on their swim team for a long, long, long time

It's only about 70 miles as the crow flies north east over the mountains. However you have to go the long way around so it's I think about 3 1/2- 4 hours by car.

Mama Fern have you moved to Kaslo yet? I know another mama Fern there. She's the owner of "Fern's Flowers and Fancies", the florist shop in town. She bought the store from my mom when she retired. Fern and my mom have been friends since I was little. If you ever go in there, tell her Shawna says hello.

I'm going to be in the Kootenays in July. We're going to the Starbelly Jam music festival and we'll be in Nelson for a few days before that. We plan on spending at least one day in Kaslo hanging out at the beach and having lunch at the Treehouse. Maybe I'll see you.

You might want to look into camp ground reservations asap. They do fill up quick and early. There is a camp ground directly across the road form the festival site and several other campgrounds within a short drive. Some people camp in Balfour and take the ferry across each day. We're staying at some cabins just down the road from the site.

We are heading to the West Kootenay area next week for vacation. Any locals want to fill me in on all the best kid friendly stuff to do? We will head to Nelson one day and spend some time at the lake, but I would love to know some other great stuff to do!

The Bafour ferry is pretty cool to take. You can go across and go to "The Glass House". I believe the guy was an old doctor but he built an entire house out of enbalming bottles. Sounds icky, but it's pretty cool. There's a really nice beach at the campground there, Kokanee Creek. You'll find lots of cool things to do in nelson (Gyro Park, Lakeside Park, baker street has tons and tons of cool little stores).

Did you go? We had a great time. If you were there and you saw a little girl in a purple fairy dress with green monster face paint, that was us!
