I have a son, Simon, who is almost 6 and homeschooling. We live off of Forest Grove Drive, near SFU. We'd love to meet other homeschoolers who live in our area and are looking for someone (whether homeschooling or not) who has a child who is 5 or older and looking for childcare help/homeschooilng support.
A month ago my husband and I found a woman, Tammy, who is helping us with our son for 4 hours a day, Monday to Friday (from 11 until 3). She has 5 children of her own, who are not home during the day (most of them are grown and out of the home). We're happy with her and the arrangement is helping our lives to go much more smoothly and enjoyably. She is hoping to add another child to the arrangement, but so far the people who are contacting her are looking for help with toddlers, which is not what she is looking for, nor what we think Simon would most enjoy.
A bit about my son. Simon is imaginative and full of curiosity. He is excellent when it comes to respecting other people's boundaries and prefers people with a gentle personality that is similar to his (he tends to avoid aggressive children). He loves Lego, machines, science, building, and crafts. We're vegan. Tammy is not though she has had no problems providing Simon with vegan snacks.
If you'd like to get together and see if your child and Simon might enjoy spending more time together in such an arrangement, and talk more about the possibility, we could meet at a park. (Tammy mentioned she's only heard from people with toddlers, so I asked if she'd like me help finding someone and she said that would be wonderful.)
It would be great to hear from some other homeschoolers in the area, whether you are interested in extra help with your child or not. The only homeschooling family we knew in this area recently moved away, and our too-busy schedules have prevented us from making as many relationships with other homeschoolers as we would like to have.
