After he became an obgyn he actually trained with a midwife! Unfortunatly he has a 9 month waiting list right now :(

Im also using a doula (I used one last time with him as well) and he is very very pro doula.. I couldnt ask for more!

Lite, the doula I used when I had my son was working privately with another doula and later moved to Birth Roots. What she told us about BR was really disappointing :( I would never hire one of their doula's. If you want more info feel free to message me, ill give you the low down she gave me. She ended up taking time off from working with them but they still keep her pic up on the page (its been over a year now!).

Unfortunately due to lifestyle differences we couldn't use the same doula again. We interviewed a couple and decided with Theresa from Blissful Beginnings. We've met with her a few times already and are very happy with her! She even offered to stay on as our doula in the event that we have a csection (I had an emergency csection with my son and may have a planned one this time around).

Aviva Cipilinski is the only doula I would ever consider using. She is beyond amazing.

Aside from that, for any pregnant womyn, I'd really suggest reading http://midwifethinking.com/

I'd also suggest eating your placenta, but, of course, I'm biased.

Serena, I'll pm you, i'm interested to hear more....

I'll look into Blissfull Beginnings, i think i may have come across that website as well...

erthe mama, do you have any further info on this doula, website, email?

I'll pm you her email address. :)

Serena- Did you use C? I think I may have referred you to her in the first place. When we both were brand new, we were each other's back up. I've unfortunately "quit" while working full time right now, but I can't wait to go back to it once I'm officially "unemployed" after the baby is born. I miss births :(

Anyone have recommendations for a good hands off (pref. female) OB. I called all the clinics 2 weeks ago to get on the midwife list, but I'm starting to get terrified I won't get 'picked'. All the OB's I've worked with ... well I would not want them at my births. There was one I could use in a pinch, but really... no one I would desire to work with.

I'm also looking for any reccommendations on someone willing to do birth photography. Ideally I'd love someone to primarily do photos, but be able to lend a hand with support if needed. Maybe I'm asking too much. I can't seem to find anyone who's photos I like.

I had Dr Ring in my first pregnancy. I liked her quite a bit. Of course she was not there for the birth unfortunately. I have heard good things about Awadalla as well (male) and Denise Black. Depends which hospital you want too of course. I had a pretty awful experience at St B. I was high risk though, and I have heard they have renovated recently and there are more private rooms, which would make a huge difference in my opinion (having my husband kicked out every night was pretty traumatizing for us). You should check ratemds.com if you are interested in reviews. Definitely a few you may want to steer clear of.

Dr. Morris at HSC is amazing if you want a really hands-off natural birth. She's the head of obstetrics there. We had her for our birth and, upon our request, she didn't do any pelvic exams, we had minimal monitoring and I got to catch our baby! (And this was in the high risk ward!) If we had to have another hospital birth, I'd totally go to her again. She usually only takes minorities or single moms though...

DrMorris is the OB for all my sisters and mother in law. My experience with her has been mixed, though in a pinch I would have used her... but apparently unless you're an existing patient, she has limited her practice to adolescents.

My experience at St.B was not pleasant either. I've only been there once for a birth, but like you, it was in the high risk, and I found the staff very very cold, unhelpful and not conducive to a natural birth. If my midwife wanted to go there I would, but not with an OB who would not be there until the actual birth. Ironicly, the client I had also had Dr. Ring as her doctor, though she didn't attend the actual birth either... so I never got to meet her. Although I suppose I do recall hearing some of the advice etc she gave was good.

I have Dr. Avery, and Dr. Corbett on my "short list" from the ratemd website. I didn't read any of the reviews for males though. I don't think I'm quite ready to give in that much yet, even though I've heard amny of them are fantastic doctors. I just personally can't have a male doing an internal, and I know I'll have to have at least one in the time between now and birth.

I had one good OB that I dealt with for two separate births, and I swore I wrote her name down in my client information, and I can't find it anywhere now. I'm cringing, but I think it may have been Dr. Corbett.

I am also from Winnipeg!

I had my first birth in summer 2009 at home in water with a midwife. It was awesome!

Now I am 9 weeks pregnant and am trying to find a midwife again! I applied at all the clinics, but I've gotten 3 'rejection' letters so far!! Even from the clinic that my previous midwife works at. I'm totally depressed about it. Especially since we had such a great homebirth the first time. I had just assumed there would be some preference for past clients of the service. But they say that they are just too full right now. I even took the pregnancy test asap and called the clinics asap. I called as soon as humanly possible!

Sorry for the rant. I just feel quite disappointed :(

I do know that midwife spots do 'free up' as time goes on, and that I may indeed get one, but I just really don't want to have a hospital birth! I guess I should just accept it, and plan the best hospital birth possible but I'm not quite there yet.

Any advice for getting a midwife in Winnipeg? Does bribery work? (Just kidding!)

Babywearer - that sucks! I thought that previous clients were usually taken first too? Makes no sense to me at all. Especially if you're doing a homebirth. So much for our great "Freedom of Choice" huh? I had a homebirth back in 2002 and when I got pregnant early last year I called up the second I got a + too, didnt even wait for a blood test from dr! I was lucky that I got in, but sadly lost our son at 16 weeks. I worry about next time (if there is one). If there is, I'm hoping bribery does work! Let me know if it does. ;)

Hello Ladies!

I am in need of some help. My family dr is retiring at the end of march. He has not transferred his patients over to anyone so now I'm stuck trying to find a new gp. One that will respect my non-vaxing views. I called the "family gp" hotline and I was given 2 names both of which got pretty crappy reviews so I'll pass on those ones. It doesnt even have to be in the area, I just need a good one. Any recommendations?

thank you!

Laura

Hi Everyone!

I am new to this site and new to Winnipeg (Crescentwood). I am now 12 weeks pregnant and have been searching for prenatal care since the first week of December - what a learning experience it has been (I'm from Chicago)! Unfortunately this severe Midwife/Doctor/Specialist shortage has affected me as well and I've given up on hopes of delivering with a Midwife here (rec'd denial letters from all). After countless efforts, the earliest Ob/Gyn appointment that I could get was for February 3 - so yesterday we drove to Grand Forks, North Dakota just to see ANY DOCTOR before my 1st trimester ended!

We are still keeping my Feb 3rd appointment (with Dr. Reynolds at HSC) with hopes that things will work out with him. Has anyone had any experience with Dr. Reynolds? Any advice on finding good prenatal care in Winnipeg? I'm considered high risk due to age, previous miscarriages and several other factors; I'm doing my best to go with the flow here....but.... I would really like to keep a local doctor than continue driving to North Dakota for this pregnancy!

Thanks!

- Joy

NewMumJoy,

do you currently have a regular medical doctor in Winnipeg? Are you driving to the States to see an obgyn? I've been seeing my regular doctor for the first trimester. I'm still hoping to get a midwife, but in the meantime I called and made an appt with an obstetrician. I didn't know this, but you don't need to be referred, you can just call them yourself and make an appt. (at least you can at the Boyd medical clinic (which is where I called.)

The find-a-doctor number is 786-7111 to find a gp accepting new patients in Winnipeg. (that's how i found my doctor a couple of years ago).

P.S. When is your due date? Mine is Aug. 4

Shenjall, I will take a look into ratemds.com, looks like some other people on this board have gotten some good information from it - thanks.

Babywearer, thanks for the tips - I did try the above hotline on a few occasions. They gave me only one doctor's name who was taking new patients and I could not get an appointment for weeks. So I said "no thank you" (still optimistic that I would find someone sooner by other means)..... Another time that same hotline told me to get all my prenatal care from any walk-in clinic, and IF they felt I needed advanced care (and I've been telling them that I'm high risk) they would give me a referral to an ob/gyn. I did goto a walk in clinic here in Winnipeg and literally as soon as I sat down the doc said I'd need to see a ob/gyn and promised me a referral - which I didn't get for another week and then it was too late - and then sent me home with no look-over. That same doctor at the walk in clinic suggested I contact Health Sciences' prenatal dept. to schedule an appointment with an ob/gyn directly. I did that as well and got the February 3rd appointment with Dr. Reynolds here in Winnipeg - and just to see someone at all WHILE in my first trimester, we drove to North Dakota this week (I could easily schedule an appointment with and ob/gyn or a high risk specialist there).

Confusing, I know!

I am due August 3! Are you planning to go to any prenatal classes, or do prenatal yoga? I'm looking around..... :)

Oh dear, NewMumJoy, that is a lot of hassle! Walk-in clinics are no fun.

This is our second baby, so I don't think we'll do a class this time around. THough they do have 'refresher' type courses so I might look into that!

But yes, for sure I'll do prenatal yoga again. I went to the classes at Birthroots last time and loved it.

I also took 2 prenatal classes at Birthroots - Hypnobirthing and Prenatal Birthing I think it was called. I found the Hypnobirthing class to be totally fantastic and would recommend it to anyone!!

Shenjall --- The OB I booked with is Dr. Adawalla (at Boyd Medical Group). He works out of St. Boniface hospital. I couldn't get in until April. So I'm seeing my fam doctor until then.

April?! You couldnt get in until April?! That's insane?! What the hell is going on with our medical system? Mothers get hounded on to 'get prenatal care get prenatal care' over and over again but we're not being seen for months or having to drive to another country? Wow. I knew the midwife system sucked but I didn't realize how bad the ob system was too. I'm so sorry ladies!
