Hi! We are moving to SA this summer. We are still not sure exactly where we will be living but I think that it will be on the North side (West Creek, Stone Oak, Alamo Ranch, etc.).
My DD will be 5 this summer and is supposed to start Kindergarten. She has some emotional issues and I don't think that she is ready (Neither do most of the people in her life including her last teacher). I am thinking of holding her back a year- my DH disagrees ... So we will need to work that out! In the meantime I would like to find some good preschools and/or Kindergartens that are smaller and "crunchy" (for lack of a better word)- to try and show him some options. She has previously attended a Montessori school and a cooperative play based school. She needs a school where they would understand and work with her emotional issues...but we cannot afford a super expensive school (so Montessori is probably out). I would appreciate any and all suggestions :.

Well, Judson Montessori is right near Stone Oak in Rogers Ranch. You might look into it. I don't know if their Tuition is more than what you're budget allows or not.

We've actually been very pleased w/ our kids school (can PM name at your request) which is in Northside ISD. My dd has emotional issues, also, and has a dx of Anxiety, so finding the right educaitonal setting for her has been a major concern. She did wonderfully at school, on an academic level, but this year I withdrew her for a while. It wasn't anything wrong w/ the academics, the teacher, or the administration, she just couldn't handle it. So we've been unschooling for awhile and now have her on the waiting list for her school (per her request). Her anxiety has gone down, which is what I needed to see before letting her go back to school.

I think if you're going to be in Stone Oak area you'd be Northeast ISD. We have several friends in that district and they are quite pleased, but none of them have kids w/ emotional issues.

FWIW, there are a lot of homeschoolers *incl the crunchy variety) in SA that meet together and do activities, as well as a strong AP community in the city - if you decide to do a part-time or pre-K program you might buffer it for your DH with plans to hang out with these guys.

Two private schools that are popular with the crunchy/gentle parenting crowd include Discovery School and Circle School. Both encourage strong parental participation in events and presence during the school week (or cash opt-out if you work).
