We're living in NY which is where my husband is from but were recently visiting Dallas and Oklahoma (where I'm from). Austin is now 'on our list'... A bit of info about us: I'm currently a homemaker with my two children in tow , lead API groups here monthly, and am interested in things like gardening, homebirth - my son was born on our back porch in a birth pool; extended breastfeeding - my breastfeeding my almost 3 year old still; cloth diapering; and especially gentle discipline with inspiration from Naomi Aldort, NVC, Playful Parenting, and some others).

I would love any info on Austin. Is there a forum for Austin mommas? I saw the question someone posed about maybe moving to Austin, but didn't find an ongoing thread for MDC Austin parents to connect. I'm wondering what neighborhoods you would recommend for us to explore online and in person (our favorite one is where no one uses their detached garages and walks the sidewalks and it's a real community), especially as any trip there will short and jam-packed. We need to know right where to hone in. We saw that the Waldorf school there is on south side and a bit west (if i recall correctly) of austin and we've also been told that the south side of austin would be a better fit for us (not sure if true or who told us that now; someone when we were in dallas).

Any other info would be great or key things we could begin to look into, or godo times to visit Austin with community events going on that would give us some of the flavor. For anyone who moved from the northeast, just wondering how you like living there. We're really enjoying being able to go away just on a weekend to places like Woodstock/Catskills, Boston, NYC, upstate, New England, etc. That's my biggest con right now for Austin, feeling like we have to get on a plane to go anywhere and missing the short weekend trips to varied locations from mountains to ocean to city. Theres so many 'pros' though on our list for Austin... Could anyone direct me to the Austin thread, if there is one?

TIA,
Jamie

We live in Austin and LOVE it. My fiance and I moved here back at the end of Feb from Ft Worth.

There are several other groups in Austin on other websites. I know Austin Mamas on yahoo groups is pretty busy. There is also several meetup.com groups for Austin. I am a member on several groups. When I get some free time I will sit down and type something out for you. We are still new, but have traveled back and forth for the past several years.

The Austin Waldorf School is near my house and not in a populated area. Not bike or walking friendly at all, as it is off a major highway. If you are interested in Waldorf, you can take a look but it is FAR SOUTH. South Austin is expensive. Home prices are cheaper than other parts of the country, but taxes are definitely not.

we live in NE austin off of 183/ Ed Bluestein and Loyola area, in between Manor and 51st. There are more walking areas/ bike trails to and from places where we live. Plus, the COL isn't too bad either. We pay less than $1000 a month for our apartment and live in an apartment that's over 1,000 sq ft.

Austin's API forum is on www.bigtent.com. You can get help/info about residential communities, events, midwives, etc. from it.

We're planning in relocating to Austin from SoCal.

For me, being close to nature is a plus. We can't afford a trip down there to check things out before a move, unfortunately. So, I was thinking we'd put most our stuff in storage and stay in an apartment until we decide where we want to be.
