Hi folks,  Anyone know of any great Austin midwives who speak Spanish??  I've already gotten lots of insider recommendations for great Austin midwives, but am looking specifically for English-Spanish bilingual ones.  If you know of any, please share the info!!  Thanks!!

Excited, anxious and proud to be pregnant for the first time! My partner and I can't wait to meet the little boy sometime around Sept 20th.

Thanks for bumping it up, Cynthia.  I thought I would share some names since I have found a few while interviewing midwives.  Perhaps this information could help out someone else looking for a Spanish-speaking midwife.

April Bullock and the other two midwives at Birthwise all speak Spanish.

Illyssa Foster speaks some Spanish and has a bilingual birth educator. She also has a new intern Carolina Reyes who is a native Spanish speaker.

Laurie Fremgen speaks some Spanish.

I have been told that GB Khalsa speaks fluent Spanish, but haven't confirmed this with her yet.

Hope that information is able to help others!!

Note: Since I am bilingual, my need for a Spanish-speaking midwife is for my partner (who doesn't speak English). I don't want to have to be translating for him while I am in labor. So all the midwives listed here that "speak some Spanish" speak enough to be able to communicate with my partner about what is going on and give him ideas for supporting me in labor. If you are helping a Spanish-only mother, it is probably worth finding someone who is truly fluent since you wouldn't want communication barriers between the mother and midwife. But here you have at least a place to start to check in about levels of fluency.

Carolina Reyes is wicked awesome. She's a graduate of the program I'm doing in El Paso (a MEAC accredited school and birth center, she would have more than 80 births under her belt from here alone), and definitely more than an "intern" ability-wise. Anyway, rah rah for Caro. I'd happily have her as my midwife. ;)

For greater things are yet to come...

Another midwife to add to this list is Julia Bower & the midwives at Birthwise. Julia is bilingual & the midwives at Birthwise are proficient too.
