I am so wanting to have a VBAC, but no one seems to be willing as I have had no previous vaginal births. Please help! I am in Baytown but willing to travel for excellent prenatal care. Thanks you so much!

Have you contacted your local ICAN chapter?  They will be the most knowledgeable about providers in your area.  I am in Austin and I don't know specific names but I know of a mom near me who was thinking of traveling to Houston to do a VBA3C with a supportive provider so I know they are out there.  How many sections have you had?

Thanks for your quick response. I have had one planned CS.

Hmm, only having had one CS unless you are high risk for other reasons there should be providers willing to take you.    Definitely contact ICAN, go to a meeting if you can and they should have up to date info on VBAC friendly providers in your area. Even if you can't go to a meeting they should have an email group or a facebook page where you can get some information.   Have you considered a midwife and the home birth/birthing center route? My VBAC was at a birth center and it was amazing.

There are also some active VBAC facebook communities that might have some info for you.  Don't give up!  Good luck and keep us updated on what you find out.

I spoke with two birthing centers (bay area birth center and rite of passage) and the women's specialists of Houston and both said they would not take me because I had not previously had a vaginal birth. My first was born in 2009 by planned CS because he was "too big." I did not have gestational diabetes or HBP or any other complications. I've out a call into my local ICAN and am waiting for a return call. Thank you for recommending them. I am open to a midwife wife attended hospital birth, a birth at a birthing center, or a natural birth with an OB. I'm just not really sure where to go from here as everyone is telling me my only option is a OB, and I'm afraid I will be forced into a repeat CS.

Surprised to hear that about the birth centers. Ben Taub is a great hospital for VBACs believe it or not! Have you considered a homebirth??? (Baytown is my hometown and I am a doula)

My DH and I are going to the BIRTH fair on October 5th and hoping to get in touch with a midwife that we really mesh with. We are not opposed to the idea of a homebirth, but honestly had not considered it prior to being rejected from the birth centers.

There are lots of options for VBAC in Houston. The midwives with The Women's Specialists of Houston aren't able to attend them, but the OBs do it. Dr. Espana is awesome! Dr. Dryden is amazing too, but you have to have a referral from a current patient to get in with her. I've heard great things about Dr. Ivey (I think he's with the Baylor Group).

I've attended one VBAC at Ben Taub, and she enjoyed her care. It's not as cushy as TCH, but they were accommodating to her wishes.

I've heard Magnolia Blossom Birth Center will accept VBAC clients, but it's probably quite a trek for you.

I believe most home birth midwives do as well. Sandra McDonald was my midwife, and I highly recommend her. There are lots of other awesome midwives. Check out the Greater Houston Midwives Alliance website for a listing of midwives in the Houston area.

Good luck!

Have you contacted Dr. Davidson at Ben Taub? She is the VBAC doctor. She will be speaking at the birth fair this weekend.
Dr. Zepeda with The Women's Specialists is incredible. He was my OB when I delivered my twins naturally in February.

I don't know how I missed this post, but I heartily recommend Dr. Hector Del Castillo out of Memorial Hermann in the med center. I'm having a VBA2C with him this December, and he is just wonderful. I have had previous vaginal births, but I really don't think that will be an obstacle with him. In fact, I just had a conversation with him the other day about my birth preferences, and while there are some concessions considering that it's a hospital birth, I was really happy about our discussion. He even seemed frustrated by the hospital policy that requires continuous monitoring, and assured me that I will not be stuck in bed.

I live in Katy, but I think it's completely worth it to drive downtown for him. Plus, Memorial Hermann is the best hospital I've ever given birth in. It's great, you know, for a hospital.

Michelle, wife to DH, and momma to DD16, DS15, DS12, DS10, DD9, DD7, DS5, and baby girl born Christmas Eve 2013!
