I live in Salt Lake City, but a Tulsa-resident friend told me last night she is 9 wks pregnant and has no info--about anything (pretty scary). I told her some benefits of going natural, but she needs a care provider and I have no network in OK! Anyone had a good experience with a midwife out there? She really liked the idea of a birth center, but they can be hard to find. Anyone know of anything?

Also, I'd love to give her a recommendation for a pediatrician who is anti-circ and will give good info about vaxing etc. I doubt she knows much about these important decisions!

Any help MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance!

We no longer live in Tulsa, but while there, we LOVED our ped. Her name is Dr. Miriam Mills at the Young Peoples Clinic. She does osteopathic manipulation on the babies and actually said "Good for you!" when we didn't circ. They are also very understanding and flexible with vax, although she does "recommend" them, no one in her office will pressure you. Good luck to your friend!

I forgot to add... Natural Lullabies is an awesome resource for education and support for natural mamas. They have tons of classes and a great social network to meet other moms that think the same. They would also be able to recommend a midwife.

There is not a birthing center in Tulsa or the surrounding area. If your friend is interested in a homebirth, I would recommend Ruth Cobb. She is an amazing midwife who has been practicing over 30 years. If she wants a hospital birth I would tell her to call the CNM at Associated Women's Specialist. (I've forgotten her name but several of my friends have used her and loved her.) For OBs I would recommend Dr. Bob Aikman, Dr. Lara Larson or Dr. Rita Sanders.

Like the pp, I use Dr. Miriam Mills and do like her.

I also used Ruth Cobb for my last baby. I loved her and the entire homebirth experience.

As for peds, Dr. Baumgartner is wonderful and very supportive of not vaxing or circing.

Natural Lullabies is wonderful. They offer great childbirth classes, as well as prenatal yoga and support group meetings.

You might look here for info. on midwives and natural birth providers.
It's really a sight designed to support VBAC's in the Tulsa area but I think the
women could offer lots of info. on midwives and other docs. in the area who support natural birth. Check out "Care Provider Discussion" or even "VBAC Providers." In my opinion, the drs. that are supportive of VBAC's are generally more respectful of women's bodies and their birthing wishes and they also have experience without all the drugs (which are not recommended for VBAC's.) http://www.cafemom.com/group/49829/

Good luck to your friend!

Thanks for the ped suggestion. Dr. Mills is now requiring DTap according to her NP.

I know this is somewhat of an older post, but I had to chime in that Dr. Rita Sanders is my OB, and having her is about as close to having a midwife that my insurance would allow. She's extremely natural birth friendly, and hasn't pushed anything on me up to this point (I'm 39wks tomorrow).

They really need to open a birthing center in Tulsa though...it would be such a welcome resource! Due to my insurance, I'll be birthing at Southcrest Hospital....not what I really wanted, but at least I have a doctor who believes in what I would ideally like to do.
