The European Alliance for Families was born out of the necessity to cooperate at a time of unprecedented challenges for families and family policy in Europe.

In the current economic downturn, child poverty is on the rise. Many women still struggle to balance their working and family lives, a problem exacerbated by insufficient childcare provision. Meanwhile, there is a wider picture of changing demography, with an ageing population and low birth rates.

The Alliance aims to share the best of policymaking for families and to foster cooperation and mutual learning in the field. EU and government representatives come together in the context of the Alliance in thematic seminars and good practice workshops to exchange ideas and learn from each other.

Together, the Alliance’s members aim for better provision and quality of childcare and elderly care, more family-friendly work arrangements, as well as increased gender equality and greater involvement of father in upbringing of children.

The good practice examples and studies available on this website showcase some of the good work and deeper understanding that has already been achieved. To build on this foundation, it is vital that families are put ever closer to the heart of policy-making across the EU. There is a growing realisation that promoting solidarity between generations and improving support for working parents is vital for our future economic and social development.
