We are in Olympia and trying to buy a farm and really the only areas we can afford are the small towns either west or east of the freeway in Lewis County, like Mossyrock or Onalaska. Our concern is that we would not develop community there for ourselves and our children. Is everyone in these areas mainstream and conservative? We are liberal, frugal, would-be homesteaders. My husband teaches and I homeschool our kids, waldorf-ish.

Any thoughts on rural Lewis County would be appreciated!!

Mossyrock is a bit out there - I only vaguely remember driving through there many, many times throughout the years.
I have family/old family friends in Napavine/Winlock/Evaline, and used to be fairly familiar with the area.
Of course this was back when the local dairy was still running and you could stop by a house on the highway there and get a flat or two of eggs from these folks that had a ton of chickens, and my grandma knew at least half the people we came across in the library/grocery store/bank, but still. I think if you can find affordable land, that area would still be doable, especially since you aren't so concerned with whatever politics may be going on in the school districts from year to year. I can still find my way around there though, but things have changed a little. Not so many people are involved in the grange, plus whatever laws/regulations the state/feds have passed have a tendency to put the old-school things like that dairy out of business.

My grandma and mother live in a town called Ryderwood. Its about 9 miles from Vader at the end of the highway. We live south though in Vancouver. I don't know of anyone up in that area but I love it there. Hope you find the info you are looking for!

I don't really have a lot of hope - I do appreciate your responses - still wondering if there is some small pocket alternative community, although I have seen no evidence of it.

Thanks!

Emily

There are people out here in Lewis county, I don't know if you are still looking but there is growing amount. Check in the all the organic gardens if you do a search online. and many people doing the homesteading thing and homeschoolers, many conservative, but many not.

Did you ever buy your farm?
I am in Mossyrock, and although I can probably say without a doubt that I am the crunchiest person here, I have been able to find a small community of like minded families living out here in east Lewis County. I would love to meet more though....Anyone else out here in Mossyrock, Salkum, Morton, etc?
