I am so excited I can't see straight! Hubby is transferring to Seattle so we are moving. I have been lurking here reading all the threads I can about seattle not wanting to post lest I jinx it. We will most likely be out there end of Aug
So what area would be good for a mostly crunchy Homeschooling mama of three? Hubby will work near Pikes Market and I would love to live within walking distance so we can see him as much as possible. We live in Fl now and have to drive to do anything. We didn't even own a car when we lived in New Orleans! Where do most of the HS groups meet? Is there other things I should know?
Thanks
all
Naomi
The Seattle Homeschool Group (google them) rotates parks for their park days, but they're all pretty inconvenient from downtown -- mostly toward the north end of town, if I recall.
I'd second Ballard being a good neighborhood. I live in Ballard, and there are lots of kids and homeschoolers around in the area. And, it's about 20-25 minute bus commute downtown on a local, and there are 3 different routes that go downtown. (The express buses are faster but run only during commuter hours.)
I wouldn't want to live downtown. It's not horrible, but it is very urban.
Here's to hoping everything goes well with the move to Seattle.
I have to say that there is no where within walking distance of Pike's Market that I would want to live with children! It is far to hectic and busy- not to mention very little free outdoor space. We are in Fremont/ Greenlake and I feel that it fits our lifestyle very well. There are plenty of parks, local businesses, natural grocery stores and access to direct bus routes to downtown.
When looking for a neighborhood I would recommend anywhere within the Ballard/ Greenwood/ Greenlake/ Wallingford area.
Good luck! I hope you enjoy the city. I have been here for 3 years and have fallen in love with all that Seattle has to offer.
Thanks for all the input! We pretty much came to the same conclusion belltown is out not kid friendly enough... Ok What about West Seattle, Queen Ann, Lower Queen Ann and South Lake? Any thoughts
Thank you so much I can't wait to move! Now if only the house would pack itself!
West Seattle is great! The drive to/ from downtown can get pretty backed up at times, but if you don't have to make the journey during rush hours it is no problem at all. There is a water taxi which runs for most a the year, which makes for a very easy commute if you don't need to have a car with you. WS offers everything you would need on a day to day basis and most parts of it are safe and family friendly.
As for the Queen Anne area- it is nice, but a little more crowded than the other neighborhoods. It offers less options for daily conveniences, but you could walk to downtown( with many HUGE hills)
I just moved to Seattle recently myself (also from fl) but I love Wallingford, Fremont, and Green Lake. You might not be able to walk to Pike's Place, but youll probably be able to walk to most everything else you need.
