Sorry, looked through 3-4 pages of this forum and couldn't find a recent answer...
crunchy veg mom, husband, 20-month-old, and pit bull moving from Chicago and looking for bike- and transit-friendly neighborhood with walkable groceries/coffee, playgrounds, and decent schools. Dog park would be nice but we're flexible on that one... Prefer higher density, must have sidewalks!!!
Anyone??? Ideas?? We're not rich but we'll pay ~$1200 or so for a 2-3br.
I've lived in Portland my entire life, and in various parts of the city. Inner southeast Portland (the square between 12th and 60th, between Powell and Burnside) sounds like a good match for you, but rents can be kind of high in certain neighborhoods, depending on whether you're looking for a single-family home or an apartment building. It's definitely the most bike-friendly, dog-friendly part of Portland, although in general Portland tends to be a pretty "friendly" city.
Do you know where(ish) you/your husband will be working? That can make a big difference in terms of where to live!
I'd suggest the following areas: SE Portland as described above, NW Portland around Thurman, and SW Portland in the Hillsdale area.
Good luck with the move and welcome to the best city in the world!
