My family is moving to Portland in August so I can take a new job, and my husband will continue to be at home with my 4yo and 22mo little boys. Is there anybody out there that knows of good groups in the city that would be welcoming to a daddy (with or without me there)? Or wants to hang out? :) We'll be in the city (right now, near Alberta Park if that means anything) for at least the first year we live there to learn more about the area.
He's an awesome, gentle daddy (and a great cook, coffee roaster, musician), but he has trouble finding a community of parents sometimes because he's a man :( This has been hard on us, but harder on our boys- and what does that tell them about being boys? We're hoping it'll get better after we move.
Oh, and while I'm at it, pediatrician and dentist recommendations wouldn't be turned down either ;) We would like a doc who is ok with delayed/selective vaccination, intact penis care, holistic health, and you know, nice, but we'd settle for someone that just wasn't horrible and judgmental. And we'd like a family friendly dentist who isn't anti-nursing and can do dental work without mercury/heavy metals...
No luck, eh? :/ I guess we'll search around once we're in town :) We're sort of shy, and I'm more of a homebody than my husband (which is unfortunate since I'm the one that can work right now!) We had good luck in Gainesville Florida with a very supportive community and we're hoping to find another supportive community up there <3 We've moved around a lot- we're from Houston originally, and I've lived in Berkeley, Austin, Gainesville, Philly, and now up to Portland, where we're hoping to stay. We have friends and my husband's sister that live in Seattle and further north (Mt. Vernon and a couple of other places), but nobody in Portland yet.
Reading through all these posts has been super helpful already! I wish I'd found this before we rented the house we found from afar, but it's only for a year and we couldn't afford to fly out there again to search around.
We don't plan on sending our boys to school yet, and I've heard the secular homeschooling/ unschooling community out there is great. Is there an online group I can join to get to know it?
I saw the homebirth meetup that I'll be interested in going to once I'm in town, and I'll be seeking out the local LLL group. Any other groups out there that you all enjoy?
Thanks for reading in any case :)
