Hello to all Portland and Vancouver area mamas.

The past two years, we've had cake parties around the holidays. Do we want to do it again??

I'm hoping that this is early enough to get a decent venue. I'd love suggestions if anyone has them. Right now thinking of Dishman Community Center's auditorium.

And if anyone would like to help out, please post here or PM me

For those who haven't been before: Everyone brings a cake or other dessert, we hang out and eat while kids play. I'm really hoping we can do it since there weren't any general-area picnics this summer.

HOORAY! I voted for before thanksgiving, cause that's what I'd prefer... but I could do after, too.

Do you go anywhere near Dishman on your school commute? It would be great if someone could stop in and check out the venue; I've never seen it, but it looks nice online, and also like it would be easy to get to even from a bus.

that sounds fun! I voted after thanksgiving, but for no real reason other than the fact that the further I get into the 2nd tri, the less sick I tend to feel. So I figure, the later, the more I'll likely enjoy it! hehe.

I have been lurking around and kind of wishing I could meet you guys IRL, and then I saw this and it was just a sign from above, since cake making is a potential future career for me. Love it love it love it.

The later the better for me, 'cause mid November is when DD2 is scheduled to make her appearance in the world.

Karen, have you called Dishman to find out what days are available and how much it costs?

Not yet. hoping to do that today.

Thanks for all the offers of help, mamas! I'll let you know what I need once I've got it figured out.

OK, looks like we can get Dishman Community Center's auditorium on any Saturday after 4pm. I am planning on November 22nd right now - that is the weekend before Thanksgiving. Cost is $75 per hour, plus a $25 application fee. A two hour party with half hour before and after for setup/cleanup would be $250.

Does this seem doable or reasonable? I based my choice of venue on accessibility for all (east, west, Vancouver, busline) and an estimate of 75 people, including kids.

Sounds good to me, I'm happy to chip in money. Does anyone know how that went last year? I mean, did people chip in enough? It could maybe be a "donate what you can... suggested $4." and then anything extra can be donated to a charity or something like that?

I also have a Chinook Book to bring that has almost all the coupons still in it.

You might want to ask Claudia how much usually came in to pay for the parks. 250 sounds like a ton of money and I would hate for someone to get stuck footing the rest of the bill. Do you have a time yet?

On Saturdays, it is only available after 4pm.

I don't mind fronting the money, but we can't afford to pay it if donations are sparse. As it is, 22 people have responded that they are interested. So that's over $10 per family, and it seems like too much for two hours of sitting around and eating a bunch of cake :-(

$10 to sit around and eat cake seems perfectly reasonable to me.

so is the dishman a definite thing? i messed up and posted on the other "pdx" thread, and then i was thinking the mt tabor thing (covered picnic area) would not work for bus mamas. sometimes i should really just not say anything! duh. i would pay $10 to sit around and eat cake though
omgoodness, i just remembered doesn't Urban Grind have community space? how $$$ would that be?

Stupid *&(^( maintenance right when I'm about to post. *(^*^

OK, I started a new thread for cake party planning, just to get it off the various threads and into one spot. I'll edit the first post as needed.

I don't remember being asked to contribute last year, nor did I see a donation jar. I don't remember it being that much either. Not that any of that is any help... it was too crowded for me, so I'm not really interested this year. I spent the whole time wondering who anyone was, but was NOT going to ask everyone their name.

Last year was absolutely CRAZY and awful because of the venue - one of the reasons I started looking earlier. And IndysMom was collecting donations, but I think she only did the asking on the boards.

This year should be MUCH better - a larger space, safer place, more time to plan. Jill, I hope you'll reconsider, or at least remain open about attending.

DIdn't mean to sound grumpy.. Kieran does also not like crowds. I just wonder if I was supposed to pay someone last year, cause I don't think that I did. The space did not bother me, actually, if anyone liked that option. I'm also right by Village Ballroom and like that space OK, if anyone wants to check that. It's a bit less bus friednly than some, I am sure.

Oh, just saw the other thread, I guess you found a place- and cheap! I thought we did evening last year cause people wanted it as dessert-time?
