Currently still studying, but when I finish apprenticing, I'm hoping to move somewhere in Oregon that really needs a midwife. Is there a midwifery practice in La Grande? Anyone here live in La Grande? I'm in Bend now, we've got plenty of midwives over here!

I'm not in La Grande, but a bit further SE, and YES, we need MW's over here! The closest I could find when I looked for both pgs was Bend or in Boise. I had an Idaho MW for a few prenatals this last time and it was fine but it would have been nice to have someone closer and with paperwork from my own state, since that's part of the reason I even wanted a MW (so that I didn't have to do the paperwork...but I still had to do it all myself because the Idaho MW couldn't).

Cool! Thanks for replying. We'll have to take a trip over that way and poke around.

Hi Kat,

Yes, I believe ALL of Eastern Oregon needs midwives!! As far as I know, there is only ONE midwife serving the whole of Eastern Oregon (she drives a LOT), and she desperately wants more midwives to move out that way.

Do you have her info? Maybe a link to her site? I'd love to talk to her!

Her name is Sherry Dress. She's on the DEM Board. http://egov.oregon.gov/OHLA/DEM/DEM_...iography.shtml I don't know her email, but I bet it wouldn't be too hard to find.

Move north! There is ONE practicing m/w in the eastern gorge (hood river/the dalles area) and her partner (they were my m/w with my youngest) just moved to Texas. so yes, HUGE need up here! you'd think Hood River would have more, but they just don't.

Yes! One of my best friends lives in La Grande and I am dreading the drive from Portland when she has her next baby because she really feels she has no options there! They need you.

Only one in Hood River? We love it over there! I DO find it surprizing there aren't more practicing midwives there!

Another plug for E. Oregon though... LOL But look at how close to Portland Hood River is...in comparison to how close the E. Oregon towns are to anywhere else with MW's!! Seriously, I don't think there's any competition when it comes to what area of the state needs MW's the most. Even though certain places over on the W. side of the state may lack midwives, there are many more in that area than there are over here!

PLEASE COME TO LA GRANDE!!! We currently have 3 OBGYN's (all men) and one midwife who travels from Ontario. I am a certified doula (CBI) and haven't been able to really advertise myself, but have had some serious interest whenever I do get to plug "what a doula is." Also, I am currently working on getting into nursing school and from there into the Master's in Midwifery at OHSU so that I can help provide more options in this area.

I'm pregnant and without money or insurance that would cover the cost of the midwife, I don't want an unassisted birth so I get to have another hospital birth.... Very upset, but with two other little ones and being a full time student I dont' see another option.

La Grande needs you, we need more options!

Can you tell me her name? I live here and didn't realize there were any MW's in this area (I've been looking for 4 years, but now we UP/UC...but it'd be nice to know of one closer than the Boise area).
