Like many parents we try to keep exposure to screens to a minimum. So when I do allow screen time I want it to be in a way that builds creativity and skills and honors things that the little ones are already interested in, like creating art.
This graphics tablet turned out to be an absolute joy for this purpose! The design of the tablet and wireless pen are easy for little hands to use and encourage participation and creative thinking. The tablet comes with software that includes programs for coloring and painting as well as educational games in three age ranges 3-5, 6-8 and Challenge. The games are fairly well done--allowing kids to explore everything from colors and shapes to reading, geography and math--plus they are all age appropriate and safe.
One of the best aspects of this tablet though is the fact that it overrides your computer's mouse and can be used on just about any website or Windows software--such as art programs and kids reading sites like Starfall. Whatever your kids are already enjoying, this tablet will help them get the full benefits. So if you feel uncomfortable with them playing games, they can still use the tablet to draw and paint on just about any software you have. They can color just like they would with paper, while exploring the wonderful world of digital art!
This is a graphics tablet, not a stand alone tablet, so it needs to be hooked up to a PC to work and the results are seen on the computer screen not the tablet itself. If you hook your computer up to a large monitor or TV the full effects of the tablet are really felt as kids color and draw on the huge screen. And, of course, it is a great way to allow the kids to enjoy the computer with a device that was made just for them--helping you protect adult tablets or keyboards.
The tablet seems really well made and the price is right at just about $50! I would say this item could easily be a hit for ages 3-10--depending on the interests and skills of the child.
