Monday I was like 2cm, 75% effaced. rah! but no baby yet. I wouldn't have an actual baby and not tell people despite what some of my acquaintances or relatives, and I'm sure everyone else has some like that, appear to think. "had that baby yet?"

I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow, got checked yesterday at my appointment due to loss of mucous plug and 10 days of fun fun contractions
just shy of 4 cm and 60%effaced baby between -1 and -2 station.
But I think I'm quite content remaining pregnant until after Christmas.

As of a few days ago I was 1 cm dilated, 70% effaced. I had a few hours of real contractions on Saturday night (2-3 mins apart, lasting 90 seconds), but I was hesitant to be checked because I didn't want to feel disappointed if there wasn't much going on....though I know there is a lot going on - does that make sense? Anyhoo, I did feel a little bummed, but know that my body is working in it's own time and trust that my baby knows when she's ready to arrive.
My first three were 2 weeks 'post' date, so i'm not surprised to still be here at 41 weeks...but my instinct has been that this babe would arrive earlier than the others.
I am really enjoying reading everyone's birth stories and also glad that there are other mamas still posting who haven't birthed - I appreciate all the thoughts everyone's been sharing.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread. I am curious to hear from mamas who have delivered how their cervix was before labor started. Anyone go from nothing to laboring pretty quickly?:
With DD, I was 3cm, 75% effaced, and she was engaged at 32 weeks.
With this little guy, I am now over 38 weeks and am soft, closed, 30% effaced, and posterior. His head is at -2 station. Loads of contractions but they don't seem to do anything. Maybe he will surprise us?

|Lauren710||I was curious so I checked to see if I could feel anything yesterday.. LOL, I haven't visited my ol' buddy in a while, since I obviously haven't been charting during the pregnancy. I think I felt a mucus plug? Couldn't tell much other than that, it was kinda soft and hidden so I *think* I'm a little effaced but not dilated yet, but I'm no expert. My practice doesn't do cervical checks until I'm at the hospital and well along in labor, which is fine with me.|

I'm at 39.4 and had my first check today. I must say I'm not fond of these cervical checks b/c they lead to too much 'head' time - you think too hard about it, kwim? Anyhoo... I'm 1cm-ish, 80% effaced and at stage -2. Basically, could go tonight, or anytime in the next 2 weeks.
With my first, that practice checked me every week from 36 weeks on and I remember being 2 cm for over 3 weeks! drove me nuts to think that I was that far along for SO LONG. With my 2nd I never had them check me - just relaxed me a bit....

|theypswife||Just went in for a check-up today - I'm 39 weeks, 3 days, and I'm at a big fat nothing! Barely a fingertip dilated, no effacement, and babe's at -3 and ballotable. I *know* that it all means nothing, and that I'm still not even to my due date, and that LO will come when he/she's ready, and all that...... but still, I feel deflated and like I'm going to be pregnant for EVER... How do some mamas make it to 42-43+ weeks without going nuts??|

|dsaucone||40w 1d - 2cm 25% hopefully soon so I don't have to deal with stupid doctors. I really don't understand how they earn that degree sometimes. I really don't.|

|avivaelona||Its ok Iolanthe, 39 weeks is early still! Plus not everyone dilates and effaces before labor or drops before labor. Especially for not first babies.|

|i0lanthe||39 weeks and a whole lot of nothing (like, long closed firm posterior and baby at zero station). Remind me that this is ok|

|jenniferadurham||38 w today. Went to MW yesterday and am only 2cm, 10% effaced, did the membrane stripping, but my cervix isn't ready yet. I am wiping slimy/brown stuff away when I pee though...and there was a sizeable chunk in the bottom of the potty...but I'm not sure if that's from her messing with me, or REALLY me having my bloody show. I dunno.|

Last week @35 I was closed, very soft, and 25% effaced (this is our first LO)
I spotted for almost a week after, so I don't know if I want her to check me today
B/C of my GD, I am having a sizing sono today so I am excited about that

|Luv2bemommy||I was 1cm, and -1 and really soft but still long (according to the MW) a few days ago.. 36 weeks.|

|wembles||Just went this morning--I'm 37 weeks, 5 days. I am 1 cm dilated, 75% effaced. Still spotting from the exam--ouch! Not fun!|

|waldorfknitmama||back from my m/w appt. 4-5cm dilated, enganged, 80% effaced, feeling like labor is on the brink. . .|

Coming up on 40 weeks and all I know is the baby's head is firmly in my pelvis. I saw the OB today and declined an internal exam. The medical assistant who took my blood pressure, etc didn't seem to grasp the concept that I didn't want to have one, but the OB was ok with it. He even admits it doesn't tell you much.
I see my MW tomorrow and I'll see what she says. Last time I saw her, she said the baby still wasn't really engaged in my pevis. Hopefully, her assessment is that it is now engaged.
I've had some contractions the last few days, but nothing that makes me think labor is soon. Then again, I didn't have any with my other kids so hopefully that doesn't mean anything either.

|i0lanthe||38 weeks, fingertip (dilated), 50% (effaced), firm/posterior. This is within epsilon of nothing-going-on-yet, I reckon.|

|avivaelona||CB with J. I was 2cm and 80% effaced when they took out the stitch, and then I stayed that way for three weeks. I don't think it really matters, the baby comes when it comes whether you pre-dilate or not. Its maybe a little more likley that your water will stay intact til you go into labor if you are still closed.|
|12-02-2008 11:01 AM|
With DD, I was 75% effaced and 3 cm at 31 weeks. Stayed that way (on bedrest and terbutaline) until 37 weeks. They took me off the meds and my water broke the next day. Easy!
Now, here I am at 36w2d and my cervix is long and closed. All these contractions aren't doing anything (even though they are crampy and hurt!). Does this mean I will be pregnant forever?! Somehow I knew this would happen since we were all so worried about preterm labor. Can anyone tell me how soon you can go into labor if your cervix is long and closed?
I have an acupuncture appointment next week to help my body prepare. I'm not trying to rush things. He probably needs to cook a little more. But man, oh man, want to be holding my little guy safe and sound soon!
|12-02-2008 12:13 AM|
|avivaelona||not having any more internals if I can help it, but I am having some wicked braxton hicks. They still somehow feel like braxton hicks and not "real" contractions but are very strong.|

|arahzel||37w 4d checkup today. My first pelvic exam has revealed NOTHING. No effacement. No dilation. Looks like this time may be similar to last time. Nothing till labor!|

|A Mothers Love||As of today...36w3d..I am 2cm & "very soft" & was told I need to take it easy.|

|Biscuits & Gravy||Just got back from my 37 wk appt. 1 cm, 60% effaced and he could feel baby boy's head. I realize this means little as far as how close I am to labor, but this never happened at all with DS so I'm excited for any progress at all.|
|12-01-2008 02:07 PM|
|bronxmom||Can you tell baby's station from the outside or does that require an internal exam? I don't plan on doing any internal exams and don't set much stock by dilation as it can vary so widely before labor starts. I don't want to be too excited or too frustrated unnecessarily. But I would like to know how far the baby has dropped just b/c I can't tell what is considered low and how much more pressure (pre-labor) to expect, etc. My mw said he is definitely engaged in the pelvis at our last visit (at 36w2d, now 37w6d), but not sure what that means exactly. He feels lower for sure and there is more pressure - but I don't feel like there's a bowling ball between my legs or anything and can still walk without waddling I've been having lots more BH and sometimes definitely painful and more pelvic pressure, but generally feel okay and not like this baby needs to come out really soon.|

No, wait, you're right. DUH. haha.

|jenniferadurham||Still having ctx, but they are still sporatic. Had them this morning for an hour every 7 minutes, but they turned sporatic again after I got up and ate. I'm wondering how friggin long I will have to do this until he actually comes out. I'm exhausted....sheesh! lol|

|romamama||I am 37 weeks and some change. I have been going between 2cm and 5cm for two weeks. The baby is completely dropped and the doctor is shocked that I haven't gone into labor yet. the contractions are regular in irregular patterns, so this has caused some false alarms. I just really want this pressure to be relieved!|
