KSLaura, thanks.  That's a great point.  I'm actually specifically interested in multiracial families (and all other types of diverse families), so I was hoping that this forum would be a good fit!

KSLaura You know, you're kind of self-selecting for a tolerant/diverse group of people by posting in the multicultural forum. Just thought I'd point it out. Good luck!

Hello, my name is Elise Harvey and I am a mother of a 9 month old biracial son as well as a 3rd year PhD student in Marketing at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.  I am working on a project that explores how parents understand the concept of family and perceive family portrayals in children's advertising.  The results of this study will help us understand how you, as parents, view different types of families in children's advertising as well as your opinions about exposing your children so these different family types.

If you are interested in participating, you will answer questions about family types, diversity (ex: racial), and advertising specific questions.  Some questions in the survey are of a sensitive nature, but all of your answers will be kept confidential and no identifying information will be collected.  Data from all of the respondents will be compiled and published.

To qualify, you must be a parent who is 1) 18 years of age or older and 2) have a child who is under 18 years of age.

The survey will take about 20 minutes.  At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you are willing to take surveys like this a few times each year.  For all participants who finish the survey and sign up to complete additional surveys, I will enter you into a drawing for a $25 gift card to a retailer of your choice (I will send the winner a list of options).  The survey will be open until March 15, 2014 at 5pm.

The survey can be found at:

If you know any additional parents that would be willing to take this survey, please feel free to forward the link on to them.

Your participation is greatly appreciated!  I believe that it is so important to understand what parents want and expect out of children's advertising, so that we can shape the future of what our children are exposed to.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at

UPDATE:  Thank you to all of the parents who have completed surveys.  I've received 14 so far.  The goal is to get at least 100 total, so I'd appreciate it if more parents would take the survey!

UPDATE #2: I'm keeping the survey open for another 24 hours because I need about 20 more people to take the survey.  Will one of them be you?  I would truly appreciate it.
