* EDD: August 31
* Name: Keri
* Age: 22
* Location: Houston
* How long it took to you to get your BFP: Planned, but a surprise at the same time. We knew we wanted to have a baby, but had no idea it would happen so quickly for us. It's kind of a good thing because otherwise we might have seen reason and backed out. Too late now! (It took about four months.)
* What number child is this for you:
* Family (partner, other children, and/or furbabies): Me; my longtime boyfriend, Hank; and one dog, Dash.
* Baby's Gender: No idea and keeping it that way.

* Birth Plans/Preferences: A homebirth, maybe in the water.

Laurski Hi all!

Finally delurking to join the party!

EDD: Sept. 7th or 8th

Name: Laurski (an old nickname from my mom)

Age: 32

Location: NYC suburbs

How long it took to you to get your BFP: 6 months

What number child is this for you: First one!

Family (partner, other children, and/or furbabies): Andrew (DH), Genghis (pug), Comma (bunny)

Baby's Gender (hopes or guesses): One or the other, most likely!

Anything else you'd like to share: Just left a horrible ob/gyn practice for a lovely one with two OBs, two midwives, and a wonderful mother-centered philosophy...inspired, in part, by the thoughtful posts on MDC. I'll be giving birth at one of the only birthing centers in my area, and I am so excited!

Also--I'm adopted, with no knowledge of any biological relatives. I'd certainly love to hear from anyone who, like me, is about to meet the first person they've ever known to be related to them by blood!

Looking forward to the adventure of the next 5 1/2 months and beyond...

CelloPlayer Hey gals,

Maybe you can help me put this in perspective. I have chosen a midwife with over 20 years' experience and she's helped many of my friends have homebirths. She seems great and I chose her because I have heard that she can help empower a woman to give birth when she's tired and feels she can't do it. To me, this is worth the world!

So I met the mother of one of those friends yesterday and asked her what she'd thought of our midwife, considering she'd been at her daughter's homebirth. (Remember, this woman has had seven children, my friend Kate being one of them. She had a traumatic hospital birth with Kate and then had five homebirths afterward.) Well, she said the midwife got there too late, was tired, had Kate push before she felt the urge to push, and that Kate tore internally. She said that the midwife didn't use any compresses or oil and that she had told Kate not to get into the birthing tub because it would slow down or speed up labor. Also, Kate was apparently in transition for twelve hours and was pushing for an hour-and-a-half. Whew! She ended up giving birth on the bed, something that others of my friends have also done with this midwife -- not squatting or in the tub or even with a grab bar. Apparently this is just a terrible position for giving birth and increases tearing.

I was up at 2 AM as usual (weird pregnancy stuff) but this time I was worried about our midwife. We already had a consult with her and we start prenatal care with her tomorrow. So . . . after some thought and prayer I came to a decision that feels good. On Wednesday I'll tell her that I talked to someone who scared me about the process and I'll tell her that I understand that every woman's body is different. I'll reiterate that I want to trust my body during this process and I'll feel her out about different birth positions -- whether she thinks it's OK for me to go from the tub to the floor to the shower or whatever during the labor process, knowing that at the later stages I may need help getting into the tub or out or even saying that's what I want. (Apparently you can't talk during those later stages.)

Unlike Kate's mom, I believe that birth can be largely unassisted as long as you know the baby and the mother are OK, so I'm going to ask our midwife if she will teach my husband (an herbalist with a biology degree) to check me for dilation in the event that I need to labor for a while without her help. We'll also be up on signs that labor is progressing positively and that the baby is OK. (My midwife is the only one in her practice and she came to my friend's birth worn out, apparently. Kate's mother called and made her come earlier to check for dilation but Kate was only three centimeters dilated. Should have trusted the midwife, I thought.)

What do you all think? Should I think about a different midwife? Should I mention anything else when I see her tomorrow?

Thanks so much! :-) So happy to be entering my twelfth week and beginning to feel a lot better!

With care,

Christy

jenifera2 Hi everyone. Just found this group and am newly back to MDC after spending time here 5+ years ago.

My name is Jenifer. I'm 35 and I live in Ann Arbor, MI. This is my second pregnancy, first (hopefully!) baby. We TTC from 2002-2007 with a 9wk miscarriage 5 years ago. Quit TTC, bought a convertible in 2008 and got pregnant in December. Surprised, but thrilled!!!!

Baby's due 9/1, so I'm just barely able to squeeze into this DDC. Looking forward to getting to know everyone. And helping each other keep sane (ish).

Oh, a few more things:

Planning a hospital birth with midwife. Will find out the baby's sex ASAP, even though I never wanted to find out the entire time we were TTC. I can't explain the change, but it is what it is. Had a dating ultrasound at 10wks and heard a strong, healthy heartbeat at 12wks, but it's still hard to believe I'm truly pregnant and the baby is okay. I'm 14wks and not really showing and haven't gained any weight (was overweight to begin with) so waiting between appts to see/hear baby is hard!
