Speaking of GCI and their internet, we asked them today about downgrading since we rarely use our cable and our home phone. Thought maybe we could just do the Internet...........

LOL

Well turns out we are still on the Old Unlimited Plan for internet service and last month we used over 125,000mb which is more then the biggest package they have available!

We cannot afford to switch plans thanks to NetFlix. The customer service lady said don't do anything. In fact, don't mention this again to anyone at GCI!    whistling.giflol

Does anyone know of any actively meeting mama groups in the Valley?  I haven't ever met with LLL before, but I think I'd really like to.  I don't know how I'd do as a midwife or doula, but I sure would be interested in being a LC someday if the right training and opportunities presented themselves.  Anyway, that's just a dream.  I'm mostly just wondering about how to get together.

I'm in Palmer as well...we just bought a house in January...I'm due mid-May with my 4th...moving while pregnant is a theme in my life.  As to a mom's group I think there is a Mom's Club/group in Palmer, but am not 100% positive.

Congrats on the house!  I am in Wasilla & would also like to meet some more non-mainstream families. Count me in if you find an active group please!

I don't know of any non-mainstream meetings happening in the Valley, but I know someone over on thebabywearer.com wanted to start a babywearing group out here.

Anyone know about the coops available for homeschoolers here?

Yes, MTA vs GCI sucks big time!  And in the state of AK netflix streaming is not cheap since we don't have unlimited download/upload...though I heard mention that the lower 48 is slowly starting to do away with unlimited download/upload due to not making any money because of netflix.

I don't know of any homeschool coops either, though there has to be some with both IDEA and Mat Su Central out here.  We homeschool and use MSCS but haven't ever joined a group or coop of any kind.

I know I'm here so infrequently...I come to Mothering and my due date club all the time and often forget about the AK chatsredface.gif  Can I blame it on preggo brain?lol.gif  I'm 37 weeks and so ready to be done...(well technically I'll be 37 weeks tomorrow and officially cleared for my homebirth).  I'm so looking forward to being done with this pregnancy...keeping up with 3 other kids and the house and dh is getting impossible.

I dont have any details yet. The Anchorage Assembly just voted (10 to 2) in favor of the Legalization of Chickens and Rabbits in the town of Anchorage.

There are some links for you to check out.

I live in the very edge of a Bear Aware Area so we will have to be very vigilant about how we house our chickens, if we get chickens.

Are there ANY restrictions on chickens?  Is this just in areas that don't already have covenants?  I try to imagine some hillside neighborhoods having a coop in the backyard. :)  Is anyone nervous about bears?

My parents have chickens and were shocked when we bought a house in a neighborhood with covenants that only allow dogs and cats (and only two at a time!).  Currently, this suits us just fine, although I am hoping I don't run into issues when I try to line dry my diapers in the summer and start a compost.  When our kids are older,  and we feel we want a different situation, we can move.

We can't even get GCI for internet so we're stuck with MTA.  It stinks to have NO other option.  And we can't even get cable with either GCI or MTA.  So again, stuck with satellite.  I'd love to get netflix though and stream that in instead of keeping our satellite.  Fustrating.

I live in Anchorage and am feeling very trapped by GCI right now. Our bill for phone, cable, internet, 3 cell phones is $300 a month!!! Friggen sucks.

Ugh.  Don't get me started on GCI and MTA and internet!  I don't personally know of any other options.  It is expensive and not very good and I feel like we get ripped off at every turn.  Not fun.

Sorry, not sure about the home school coop either. :/  I know of veggie and milk shares though! :)

super exciting!  I am not planning on going and since the Alaska Birth Network is only helping with the advertisement, I don't even know who is going! The trainer is hoping to get 20 people so you might see someone you know!

Awesome!

well, we ended up buying a 2009 used one. it has 10,000 miles so still very new. still working out the payments, etc. Sucks because we didn't owe that much on our old car, but insurance companies don't have to give you something "equivalent" they have to replace the value of your old car.. anything as old as our old car has FAR more miles... so we just had to bite the bullet. Still I think we didn't do too badly. Good thing, too since we were looking EVERY DAY for 2 weeks.

I know Mat-Su lists employment on thier borough school website.  Don't know if that includes teaching positions?

Congrats on the doula classes!!!

The update from us--DH got a job offer at the fair! It's in Kotzbue, which isn't exactly where we were hoping to go... we talked it over though and feel like we could live there for a couple of years at least. So we gave them a yes although we have not signed anything yet. He's applied for 17 SpEd jobs in Anchorage district, and a bunch here and in Fbx too. Mat-Su seems to not list jobs...does anybody know anything about that?! Anyway, we figure we'll give it a month or so, and if he gets an offer we like better then we'll go with that. But if not, we do have Kotz lined up. (We don't want to make them wait long, dont' want to impair their ability to get someone else if we don't take it after all...but during May there are lots of shuffles so it's still playing fair to switch tracks)
