I have been on  a hybrid New Atkins and South Beach diet!  Congratulations on the baby!

Hey, nice to hear from you again! I had my baby in August, and am back on a semi-SB diet. Will check in with more later!

Sorry for the delay in my post. I am now down to 129 lbs!  It is amazing.  This really works!  The last pair of pants that I bought at Express were size 4!  I haven't seen that size in a VERY long time.  I have to re-stock on my groceries.  I have been cheating this past week.  I have been eating tons of junk food (which I am not suppose to have)!  I have to get back on track with a quickness!

Well, I guess I am going on the hCG diet now - I got my BFP about a week ago! Obviously, I can't prove anything, but I do think the 7 lbs I lost with South Beach (and the improved blood sugar levels, since I have PCOS) helped with this BFP. I'm more or less sticking to Phase 2 of South Beach for right now. My goal is to only gain 5-10 lbs this pregnancy, since I'm still 20 lbs heavier than I'd like to be. We are living out of a hotel for a few weeks right now, and it is making it really hard to stick to the diet. We had pizza on Monday (I had thin crust, although dh went for the pan crust), and honestly... it made me sick. That could just be the brand of pizza it was, but I definitely did not feel good after eating it. It made me realize I don't miss pizza that much!

Okay, well, we took a very quick trip to Vegas this weekend for our friends' 11-11-11 wedding, and were mostly very good, but the Bellagio brunch buffet got us a bit. Our first two plates were South-Beach compliant, but then we both very selectively picked some off-diet things to try, since we'll probably never go back. I didn't weigh while I was gone, or yesterday, but I weighed this morning and I'm actually down about .3 lbs from when we left, so I'm calling it a victory! I'm only down about 2 lbs, so I'm fairly doubtful I'll lose more than 4 or 5 lbs in Phase I, but I figure the more you have to lose, the fast you lose to begin with, and I don't have that much to lose.

I am so sick of eggs for breakfast!!!! Is there anything besides eggs I can eat?? I literally had celery and (ground-peanuts-only) peanut butter for breakfast yesterday, because the thought of more eggs turned my stomach.

Oh, and after reading through this whole thread, I wanted to comment that I haven't really been doing any sort of portion control. I took Dr. Agatson (I think that's it) at his word that you should eat until you're full, and I do. And I have nuts more than once a day. So maybe that is hindering my progress a little, but I FEEL better - I'm not hungry often, I don't crave things as much, not quite as tired - so I count that as a victory. If the pounds come off a little slower, so be it. I think my dh is down about 3 lbs now, but he doesn't acknowledge anything as real weight loss until it's at least 5 lbs. Otherwise, he says you can't trust the scale.

Anyway, pressing forward with week 2 of Phase I! Hoping Thanksgiving next week doesn't derail us too much!

I was down 1.1 lbs this morning! Woohoo!! I was actually thinking that I might end up gaining a little, since we went out to dinner (Rockfish) and I'm not sure everything I ate was in line with the diet. I had black beans, asparagus, and grilled mahi mahi with lemon butter sauce. I asked them not to bring the rice pilaf that it comes with, but they did, anyway. I resisted eating it, even though I was still a little hungry. Luckily, the butter sauce came on the side without me even thinking to ask. So I was able to dip in it, instead of having it all over. It was totally delicious, but I stopped myself from slathering the fish in it. There was still at least half of the little container left when I was done eating, so I felt okay about it, even though I probably should have totally skipped it. Dry fish is a bit boring.

Trying to convince myself to fix some salmon for lunch/dinner (dh won't be home for either), but I've felt very bleh this morning, so I don't know. I made a variation of the Western Egg omelet, which dh seemed to like all right, but I don't think it sat well with my tummy for some reason. :(

Any progress reports, sunbright? Anyone else want to join back in?

Hi! Sorry it took me a while to check in - I've been busy!!

So I'm counting Monday as our official start date. I forgot exactly how much I weighed that morning, but around 164. I'm down 1.6 lbs so far!! I know that's enough that it could just be normal fluctuations, but I weigh at the same time each day, and it's sure better than going up!

South Beach meals I've made so far:

Veggie quiche to go - dh and I are so-so on this, but thinking of adding some turkey bacon or Canadian bacon to make it a little tastier. Definitely convenient!

Broiled flank steak - dh loved this, said he'd be happy to eat it diet or no. I wish it had come out more tender. I might add some meat tenderizer next time. But very tasty!

Roasted vegetables - Made this to go with our flank steak. Very tasty! I added in some fresh rosemary, which made it extra good.

Lime ricotta creme - Made it with stevia, which is the only non-sugar sweetener I really want to use. It was not amazing, but decent, and I was surprised not to get too much aftertaste from the stevia.

Mocha ricotta creme - Ditched the coffee and added more cocoa powder as well as some slivered almonds. Made it ahead of time and let it sit in the freezer for a few hours. Pretty tasty! (Not sure if more cocoa powder violates the diet or not, but it was good!) Made it without the almonds for myself today, eating some right now!

Easy chicken saute (or something like that) - dh made this, and decided to add some red bell peppers to it. Surprisingly tasty. Had leftovers for lunch today.

I was going to make salmon tonight (this is my favorite recipe - and super easy!), along with roasted peppers and eggplant, but we're in a time crunch, so we'll have to eat out. Off to research what we can eat somewhat quickly that sticks to the diet!

I just started SB on Friday, November 4, 2011.  I started out at 141 pounds.  This morning I weighed in at 136.8.  I was very surprised.  I have been following the meal plans in the book.  I have made a couple of switches due to not liking some of the items.  I have not had caffeine and I have been trying to drink water.  I am hoping that this continues on.  Tonight I have had two scrambled eggs with a little ham, one cup of sugar free gelatin, and I am about to make the vanilla ricotta creme for my snack.  This diet was suggested to me by my endocrinologist.

Not sure if people are still looking at this but I just started Phase 1 today, DH and I are doing it together.  I am 5'8 and 166.5 this morning.  Want to get down to my pre-baby weight (from my ODD!) of 152.  That is my happy weight.  I am nursing 2 times per day so who knows, that little bit might help me lose a little more :)

Had 3 eggs, slice of reduced fat cheddar and 2 slices of Turkey Bacon for breakfast.

I wonder if it is water retention or some other normal variation when weight goes up and down 1-2lb almost overnight. I just can't imagine this being the actual weight. I've had this happen too--all of a sudden 2lb up. Then 2lb down. Maybe it is just my scale lol.gif

He has some other 'tricks' on the 17 day diet. Like green tea after each meal, and and a glass of hot / warm water with lemon in the mornings. I love it, because I love green tea. luxlove.gif

I think you're doing really well on the SB. This is such a significant weight loss. Congrats!

I am still on this stupid plateau. I lost almost a pound two days ago and then the next day was up almost all of it. I am now right at 177.  So 8.5 pounds total in 28 days I think. That actually doesn't sound half bad, lol. It is just that I lost half of that in the first 4 days. HA!

Have you looked into the 17 day diet? It is very similar to South Beach. In the first 17 days, you can have some low glycemic fruits and berries in the first half of the day, and the rest is pretty much like SB. In the next 17 days, you alternate days. Day1 is the same as the first phase, and on Day 2 you can have one serving of carbs in the first part of the day. It is supposedly based on 'alternate day fasting' idea--your metabolism never knows what to expect and keeps on being active / adjusting. Then on phase 3, you can have 2 serving of healthy carbs. Then the fourth stage is the maintenance stage--same as phase 3, but you are allowed to 'cheat' once a week.

The expectations are that on Phase 1, one loses 8-10lb, like on SB. On phase 2, the weight loss slows down, so maybe 4-6lb. Then even less on phase 3. But after you finish phase 3, and didn't achieve your goal weight, you go back to phase 1, or 2, whichever is your favorite.

I think psychologically it is easier, when it is broken down like this, with different expectations, for each phase.

I really hated the way the book was written--ugh, that condescending voice! But I really liked the idea. I lost 8lb on phase one, 3.5 lb on phase two, and then 3 lb on phase three, and I shortened it, as I really didn't like how the carbs made me feel, even if I ate only healthy carbs. I was really curious how I was going to do on phase one again, but I'm half way into it, and lost another 4lb. I love how it makes me feel--never hungry, and I don't have any cravings. Phase One is my favorite, actually. I might not go back to carbs, but am thinking about introducing high glycemic fruits later on.

If you don't mind the awful writing style, this might be something to look into. Especially if you miss fruits!

guess you hit your plataeu, i know you loose a lot the first week or two and then things slow down. i know with me i seem to loose in spurts, like i won't lose much one week then loose 2-3lbs the next, don't give up 7lbs in 18 days is a lot of progress!

i am thinking of doing this diet, i did eat to live last year, but found it too restrictive as i am not vegan. I am considering doing a combo of south beach and eat to live: ie going with eat to live as in unlimited fruits and veggies and south beach as in letting me have some meat and dairy, though i read south beach like 6 years ago, i need to brush up on it and then go from there. I am currently about 185 ish 2 months pp and would like to get back down to 155, or at least get to 165, just want to fit into my old jeans so i don't have to go buy some bigger ones. Looks like you are making great progress, a couple of my aunts swear by south beach..

Thanks for asking! My husband just finished his 2 weeks of phase 1 today and lost 10 pounds! :)

He is thinking about  staying on phase 1, but I guess it is not considered healthy

it has not been that hard for him because we have been trying for the last few years eat more 'traditional foods" a la Weston A. Price at home. But he was still eating 2 of my homemade muffins everyday for lunch as well as lots of fruit when he came home from work. I guess stopping those things made all the difference.

Hi Jalilah!  I missed your intro before.  How are things going in your home?

Candace, that is very frustrating.  I too, get discouraged when things like this happen.  On the bright side, you're averaging 2-3 pounds per week.  There might be a huge drop next week.  Don't give up!  True, lasting weight loss happens slowly.  I am on day 6 and am down 3 pounds.  I was hoping for a bit more, but really I can't complain.  It's not been so bad!

Yesterday I went out for lunch with DH and his grandma and didn't follow the diet.  I have to eat gluten-free, and the waitress brought me my very own gluten-free bread to munch on (usually I get stuck watching everyone else eat their bread).  I was so excited that I ate a few pieces, but I have no guilt.  It's so rare that something like that happens that I feel I'll get too discouraged if I have to deprive myself even more than being gluten-free.  Anyway, normally when something like that happens I give up for the entire day and then gorge on whatever, but I went right back to eating SB and had sauteed veggies and beef for dinner.  I consider that a major accomplishment!

Is my hunger ever going to go away?  I thought it would have subsided by now...

I never seem to have time to reply.  Even now, I have to keep this really short.  How are you doing Candice?

I'm on day 5, down 2.8 lbs (yay!!!) but starting to really crave carbs.  I just want some oatmeal at breakfast!  I'm also having a hard time keeping my fridge stocked with what I need b/c I'm not used to keeping certain items on hand.

Today I discovered that I can have peppers dipped in hummus for a snack (YUM!!) and found a good dinner alternative the other night.  I sauteed onions, peppers, and turkey italian sausage.  Then I added diced tomatoes, tomato juice, and italian spices.  Served it over sauteed spinach.  It was nice to do something different.

Gotta go!  Will post more later.  Just wanted you to know that I'm rooting you on!

Hi!

My husband started South Beach last week and I am just doing it with him out of solidarity (I don’t really want to lose weight). We chose it because it seemed the healthiest. We try and eat the traditional foods diet but my husband was not losing weight so south beach seemed the closest to traditional foods.

He has been on it a little over a week but not weighed himself yet.

So my total weight loss for 2 weeks of phase one is 7 pounds. I am going to stick with phase one for a few more days. My period started. I am on day two of my period which is the day that I am most bloated and hormonal. I don't want to end phase one on this note. I will go 2 or 3 more days.

Your "chicken with mounds of steamed broccoli" is very typical of me for dinner. Either broccoli or zucchini. It is quick and I really like broccoli. I am getting pretty tired of salad though.

Off to have some coffee, so glad that it is allowed. I need to get rid of this headache. It is a Wednesday which means my hardest day at work.

You made it!  Enjoy your fruit!

Why is your hubby disliking the diet?  It is because you make all the food and he has to eat it too?  I've been making real meals for the kids and DH and then skipping the carb portion and loading up on veggies.

My name is Anne. :-)  Thanks for asking.

Today is day 3.  I am doing great!  Yesterday wasn't perfect but it was much better than it would have been not on SBD.  I've taken a few liberties in order to make this diet work better for me.  For instance, the chicken I made last night had an apple sauce that it was cooked in (it had no sugar other than the apple).  I didn't eat much of the sauce but didn't let it get me down either.

Breakfast: Kids snacky thing, turkey bacon and scrambled egg

Snack: low-carb yogurt

Lunch: Salad w/chicken and beans

Snack: 2 servings pistachios

Dinner: Chicken and mounds of steamed broccoli

My period surprised me this morning. I wonder how much I would have lost had I not been starting my cycle. That explains my mood for the past few days, lol. I am thinking of staying on phase one until after my period ends.

1-2 pounds a week sounds great :D I wouldn't mind that at all.

I was hungry and grumpy yesterday. I was having a hard time getting my "2 cups of veggies" per a meal. So I sat next to my daughter to watch her play "Plants vs. Zombies" (so addicting) and ate lettuce out of the bag like it was popcorn. :lol It actually gave me some sort of satisfaction too. I miss that motion of pigging out and mindlessly munching.  But I did it without the guilt part, yahoo.

I am almost out of all my SB stuff. I really need to get to the store.

Naomismom, (what is your name? or you okay with me calling you by your user name? I am Candice, or Candi, or candipooh is fine, lol) ) I think your food list sounds good. Very yummy looking actually. I am now craving nuts. I am getting tired of cheese sticks.

My hubby is getting a little frustrated with my dieting. I try to ignore his grumbling but it is hard too. I am a people pleas-er by nature so when I hear the grumble part of me want to say 'screw it'. But then I remember how much better I feel. Even now at 179 pounds I feel so much better than I did at 190 something. I can move around easier, I can better chase the kids at work (I worth with children who are autistic, some are runners) and get up and down from the floor with them.

The biggest thing I miss.....popcorn. Especially movie theater popcorn. We have been to the movies 4 times in 4 weeks (we are movie freaks and a lot of good show have come out, lol) I have not had one little curnal since starting SB. I read that is (I think it was) phase 2 that you can have one serving of popcorn as your carb. The serving was 1/2 cup. Oh my goodness. That is so stink'en funny. 1/2 a cup??? I can down about 20 times that in a 2 hour movie. I think my best bet is just to stay away altogether. I may, during phase 3, have a cheat day every once in awhile. But that is so far off I can't even count on it.

Today is my anniversary. 14 years of marriage.  Wow, that is a long time. :D I count my Blendtec blender as an early present. I can't wait to blend some fruit smoothy with it.

Wow, call me chatty today. Have a great day all.

You're so close!  I found a great article about a woman who did SBD and only lost 6 pounds in phase 1.  She was discouraged but still, 6 pounds is a lot in 2 weeks.  She lost about 1-2 pounds per week after that.  That is plenty fast for me so I am trying to keep my expectations low.

Yesterday was day 1 for me

Breakfast: scrambled eggs & turkey bacon

Snack: nuts

Lunch: chicken on spinach

Snack: nuts

Dinner: lean beef and refried beans on spinach

Snack: nuts

Yes, I am fully aware that I consumed way too many nuts but I was really hungry and it helped keep me on track.  I still ate way less than I normally would.  I can't have cheese so I had to make a substitute.  Today's goal is to only eat one serving of those.  I had a sample of my kids' breakfast this morning, but I know I can do this today!

So looking forward to some fruit. Tomorrow is my last day of phase one.

I am down a total of 6.5 pounds. Not the 8 to 13 that they say you will loose on phase one but I will take it. I am nervous that the weight loss will stop when I intro healthy carbs.

My scale (I use the wii) must be broken. I weighed myself and was UP 4 pounds. Putting my total loss at 6 pounds. That sound more real that 10 pounds, Ugh. Oh well.

Wow, I lost another couple of pounds. 10 pounds is 9 days. That is almost as much as I was loosing when I was on my cleanse and I wasn't eating anything, lol. I wonder if the scale was wrong. I am getting tired of phase one. I will count down the days. Next Wednesday I can move to phase 2 and have my fruit protein shake. Yummy.

I am surprised that I am still loosing because I eat dinner late. I get home from work at 9:30 and eat. Then it is off to bed an hour later. Not the best plan. I also eat quite a bit more than the recomended amount in the SB recipes. But I guess it is the right types of food that I am eating.

The last few days I have been drinking a ton of water. It makes for a lot of trips to the bathroom but totally worth it.
