Louise-chris03 I recently got the copper iud 2 weeks tomorrow now, since having it i spotted for a week now im heavy bleeding and clotting and I've started to get really bad pains in my lower tummy but on one side being my left side. I haven't suffered any other side affects yet well not that i no of. But i got this hoping it would help and id not get pregnant as nothing else has really worked for me in the past. But reading all these comments are freaking me out and I'm wondering weather if i should get it removed. I had my 1st child 5 in a half yrs ago now , and I'm just not ready for another child yet. But I'm not sure i wont to experience all these other symptoms other ladies have been getting. I have been get migraines and i am tired but I'm not sure if it connected to the copper iud i just put it down to my busy life style i have. But I'm not sure if i wont to be bleeding for the next 4 weeks as I'm not due for my period for another 2 weeks that would drive me nuts.

iownabusiness Hi ladies! I have 2 kids and I inserted the copper iud when my baby was 3 mos he's almost 5 mos now. I breastfed my 1st close to 2 yrs had mini pill which wasn't good for me. So now i decided to go with the paraguard since I'm breastfeeding and wanted non hormonal. After insertion i experienced cramping and bleeding which stopped after a week. Then a week later bleeding again for another week! Now more then a month since insertion and bleeding again, gained 20 pounds, acne all over my face (which i never had) depressed and tired all day! I right away blamed it on the iud and I'm having it removed in 2 weeks!! But I have one question is this bleeding now still from iud or did it make my period return?

fkothansen Hi Friends! I created a survey to collect data for an Argentinean researcher that is considering writing an article on copper side effects. So I would really appreciate your contribution. All the questions are optional so if you feel uncomfortable with any of them, just skip it! It doesn't take more than 5 minutes. I hope some day copper toxicity becomes a topic of public knowledge!!
Thanks!

Carocece I've had a copper IUD since 2010 . I chose this type of birth control due to having high blood pressure (genetically ). Initially the copper IUD worked wonderfully, thats until I started experiencing infections. Since 2009 I have been treated for bacterial viagnonsis related to my copper IUD. Like others have mentioned , I also started having mild anxiety attacks , my boyfriend at times would also say he felt the IUD. After four years of dealing with having to be on antiobiotics every 2-3 months , I finally removed the IUD. It's been such a relief. Now I'm debating what birth control method to go with , due to my high blood pressure condition I have two options : the depo shot or mini pills ? any suggestions?

mirena detox

The mirena causes serious damage to the female body, and the only way to get rid of these side effects for good is to remove the mirena and take natural supplements, herbs and foods and consider natural therapies that will eliminate estrogen dominance, help restore the balance of progesterone and estrogen hormones, and detoxify the body from all the toxins present in mirena such as silicone and copper.

informative site

There's a very informative site with lots of information on how to lose weight and get rid of the mirena iud side effects and find other natural birth control options. Check out: http://mirenadetox.com/mirena-weight-gain/ Her detox has also been immensely helpful to my recovery and I seriously recommend it

Ratchet that varies by state- I used to insert IUDs and never got any sort of reimbursement, kickbacks, promotions, sales pitches, etc.

Your doctor doesn't have to believe you to report a side effect- you can do it yourself at FDA.gov, although I admit it is unlikely to gave a huge impact (regardless of who reports it).

crayon Paragard doesn't only have copper- the copper is mixed with nickel- if you have a nickel allergy then you will have a reaction to the Paragard.

Doctors get kick-backs from big pharma to push these on women and it is rare you will ever find a doctor that will believe you let alone report the symptoms you have.

We have a Facebook group for this very topic-

I felt better rather quickly. Look into a Copper sensitivity called pyroluria. People should be warned about this by doctors. Good luck!!

Copper IUD - Issues + Legal Battle

In 2009 I have the Paraguard IUD implanted. Since then I have experienced crippling anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain + swelling, weight gain, heart/chest pain, mental fog and uncontrollable rage. I have, in vain, worked to deal with these issues. Doctors have prescribed me a litany of medications from Xanax to Prozac - with no result except flat affect.

A friend posted information regarding Copper Toxicity and IUD's and I feel like I have finally found a possiblity for what has been plaguing me for the past 5 years. I have an appointment next Monday to have my IUD removed, but also to have blood work and mineral screening done.

I can only hope that this is the answer I have been looking for....

And I can promise - that if there is a link between the copper levels in my body and the mental anguish that has been the last 5 years of my life - I will contacting an attorney. These were never side effects I was warned about - I was assured, multiple times, that this was completely safe and at worst, I would have heavier periods for a time.

I don't have the answers yet, but I do feel like I am a step closer to fixing what was never broken. However, I can not suppress this rage towards the FDA and TEVA Pharmaceutical company... I just wonder when patient health will take a priority over financial gain.

Alew I have had a copper iud for 3 years now. I have gained 10 pounds, I am tired all the time, I have relenting migraine headaches and never got headaches before. I have been manic, depressed, and walk around in a fog. I can't sleep at night, and I have tingling and restless legs. I thought maybe I have MS. But the iud is coming out this week as these symptoms are quite scary. One day the headache and mental fog was so bad I thought I was having a stroke. I'm only 42 and I have feared the worst. It is coming out this week. Calling the dr tomorrow. Thank you all for sharing.

mapf Okay... I posted a couple of weeks ago, describing how I was feeling. Had IUD for 7 years, a lot of things came up over the years: weight gain, no energy, foggy vision/mind, bad acne, numbness on arms and legs, joint pains, facial/breast hair, cramps, almost daily headache, anxiety, horrible mood swings, heavy periods... Took out my IUD exactly two weeks ago nd even thought I'm on the pill, I feel like otal different person... my energy is back, no headaches, not foggyn, not so moody anymore. Didnt loose weight yet, but I dont feel bloated like before. Anybody who has a couple of this symptoms, believe it is from IUD and most doctors will not admit it. Good luck everybody!

Hello!

I had my IUD put in in September of 2010, and just had it removed yesterday, April 29, 2014.

I had numerous issues that I didn't even realize could have been caused by my IUD, such as hair loss, joint pain, heavy/irregular periods, excessive discharge, skin problems including acne and random dry patches. One of my friends brought to my attention the hair loss, and I didn't connect the dots until recently..I blamed it all on hormones from my second pregnancy. My doctor had me go to the lab and draw blood, to test for thyroid issues and inflammation due to possible arthritis, because she doesn't believe the paragard couldve caused my problems. My gut tells me otherwise! These are things I have never dealt with, even with my first pregnancy. I'm feeling my lab results will come back normal. I was surprised to see so many other people having the same issues! Hopefully everything works out and gets back to normal, for all of us :)

I am approaching 2 years with the IUD cooper (they said no hormones but I have some sides effects) and I am considering taking it out. I gained 50lbs. Previously, lost 50lbs. Before I gained it, I was energized and all the above. I was searching for someone who felt the same way and you do. Now its like I need motivation. My sister teases me for always taking a nap and being in the bed. I'm 26 I should be doing more. I been anxious and I have had crazy anxiety, along with mood swings, and don't let me start on the back pains and bleeding. I just been grumpy and 'blah" lol. I'm so glade I seen your post because it is confirmation.

flamingo86 My IUD has been out for about 1.5 weeks now. I had it for approx. 6 months. I was having horrible anxiety, heart palpitations, brain fog, dizziness, insomnia, and lack of appetite. I had to take 2 weeks off work. I thought I was losing my mind. Neither my dr or my therapist could understand why I was suddenly feeling so awful. I swear I would have ended up in the hospital if the ordeal had continued.

The nurse practitioner who removed it was very nice and non-judgmental. I just told her I had bad side effects and she agreed to yank it out.

I feel better. Not 100% better but improving.

Within 24 hours I noticed the horrible cystic acne on my back start to calm down. About a week later I noticed that I felt more clear-headed and much less dizzy. I am sleeping much better and my appetite is back. I still have some anxiety but nothing like the debilitating panic attacks I was having. I was actually in a good mood this morning!

I really wanted the IUD to work and am disappointed. Condoms aren't the greatest but far better than having to feel the way I was feeling.
04-24-2014 04:47 PM
rachael25 I feel faint all the time and dizzy. I swear one of these days I'm going to pass out. I don't have any of the other symptoms though. Just very foggy mind and faint/dizzy,
04-23-2014 06:34 PM
Amasonmatt Yes I had numbness in my a arms and legs as well

Just wondering if anyone else had the following side effects from the copper IUD:

- depression

- severe mood swings

- weight gain

- major water retention

- acne

- severe PMS symptoms

- overly emotional (crying about everything and breaking down very often)

- severe fatigue (can't make it through the day without a nap or two)

- feeling faint

-  overall just don't fee like myself

I got the IUD removed yesterday. The doctor insisted that the copper IUD could not cause these side effects. I went an got my blood work done as well to see if it is something else. After reading this forum and seeing how many people have had problems I made an appointment to get it removed. How long did it take most of you to feel back to normal?

Thanks

The nun got it put it at age 15, during her misspent youth.  Though, irl, most docs wouldn't place one for a patient that young.

Oh wow! I'm just wondering why the nun was using the IUD in the first place!

My husband was completely supportive--and in fact, he could always feel it during sex.  We believe that he was having an allergy to it as well because of a rash that he was getting, on his ahem, member.  As soon as the IUD was out, the rash went away.  I don't figure that's too much information for this forum!

Anyways, my husband is awesome in understanding that he's fertile every day of the week, but I'm not, so he takes it as part of his responsibility to either prevent or achieve pregnancy!

Good luck!

I've removed one previously myself, when ready for a pregnancy but couldn't remove this one for some reason so he helped me remove it.  Hubby was appalled when he got a look at it and realized what I had lived with inside of me for so long.  Kind of ironic- started watching House from the beginning not too long ago, and one of the very first shows is about a nun that is dying of copper toxicity/allergy from an IUD.  I saw it (the episode) when it first came out years ago and yet never thought of it when I went to get mine in.  Wish I had!

04-13-2014 12:40 PM
flamingo86 How did everyone's husband/partners react to you having the IUD removed? I'm getting mine out tomorrow and plan to use a diaphragm instead. My husband isn't happy about it. He says I'm paranoid and that I'm reading too much stuff on the Internet.

Don't forget nickle. If you have a nickle sensitivity- this IUD will hit you hard. I had both the Merina (first) then the Paragard- and the paragard was worse, but both were bad. I swear my house has not been "cleaned" - you know- like a good clean- in 2 years. It looks like a druggy lives here- I swear. And I am not- I don't even take over the counters hardly ever. :-(

I got the paragard out in Feb and got pregnant 5 days later- lol... so now the houses' excuse is morning-sickness. :-P

flamingo86 These are my symptoms exactly! I also had mine fitted in November 2013.
04-04-2014 01:35 PM
flamingo86 I just made an appt. to have mine removed on Monday with a nurse practitioner at my gyno office.

The receptionist was super rude and kept questioning why I want it removed. I just said bad cramps and heavy periods (partially true). Ugh!
04-03-2014 06:20 AM
bittyskye I'm sharing this because I want to make women aware of the possible side affects of the copper iud paragard. I made the decision to have this iud put in for birth control in November 2013 because my doctor recommended it. Since day one I experienced horrible effects from this iud and had it removed two months ago. Not just in the physical which were horrible cramps, constant lower back pain, retained water, constant dizziness, light headed, nauseous, Loss of appetite. I lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks. Blurred vision, extreme fatigue. I had no energy, like the life had been sucked out of me. Acne on paces I never get it like my back, oily skin and hair. But the emotional and mental effects were what put me over the edge and I knew that something was not right. I started having extreme anxiety and fear, racing heart beat that lasted from the time I woke up until I went to bed. Depression, I felt as if I was in a mental fog. Like I was in a dream watching myself just go through the motions. I thought I was going crazy. I can't put into words how I was feeling exactly all I know is I wasn't myself. This scared the crap out of me. So I started praying about it asking God what was going on. Going back to a couple of weeks after having the iud put in I called my doctor and told her a few of the symptoms I was having she said to give it time and my body would get used to having the iud. Also that some of the other symptoms I was having were not because of the iud. I waited like she recommended and things just got worse. I felt like I should really look further into the possibility of the iud being the cause of all that was happening to me. I looked up negative side affects with the paragard iud on google and couldn't believe what it brought me to. Hundreds and hundreds of women with stories just like mine! I learned that yes there are no hormones in the copper iud but there is copper! To much copper in the body is toxic to some people! There are women like me who are either very sensitive to it or are allergic to it. So basically what I found out is that I was suffering from copper toxicity! There Is sooooooo much more that I could tell you about copper toxicity and what it does to the body and the mind but I really just want women to be aware of the possibility of this happening. It may not happen to everyone but it does happen. And doctors are not telling women these possible side affects.
