Aluminum has pro-oxidant activity, in part
related to its ability to free iron from its bound
form in other molecules.38 It produces free
radicals that put the organism under oxidative
stress and, as already mentioned, impair
mitochondrial function.11 Because children
with ASD have higher levels of oxidative stress
and lower levels of antioxidants, especially
glutathione,12-17 their mitochondria are,
therefore, particularly vulnerable to oxidative
damage. Aluminum directly inhibits specific
enzymes in the mitochondria as well as having
indirect effects on mitochondrial oxidation.
