But my family was pretty weird in a lot of ways (no TV for example) and I just assumed that it was part of the package.

Curious. I also grew up unvaccinated in the polio era and somehow never had any worries about polio, was never offered the vaccine and, until I was an adult, didn't even meet anyone who had polio.
