Our ds woke up every 1-2 hours to nurse until we weaned at 20 months.  After that he immediately started sleeping through the night.  We still cosleep most nights.

We let our LO fall asleep in bed with us then transfer him over when he's deeply asleep.  When he wakes in the morning there are no tears, (we coslept for ~20 months; and the crib is near our bed).
