As far as I can tell, the baby is pretty much always lying down when breastfeeding. The only difference is if the mother is sitting or lying.

Thanks for your tips. I've not yet tried wool as I'm hoping to keep the bulk to a minimum. I used Bummis when he was a newborn - and thinner in the thigh. Perhaps I'll give them a go again....
